Holmgren wanted Downie to develop in the AHL, less to do with not being able to crack the lineup.

As for young players, i'm unsure. I even doubt Jordan Staal would be traded.

I really doubt he gets traded but it's pretty much a must-win year for the Hawks and I can see anyone not on the team (with the exception of Niemi) being traded for immediate help.

I may have missed the point of this thread....but don't teams usually trade for veterans on short term contract at the deadline? And those veterans are usually traded for draft picks and tier 2 prospects. Why would any team trade away their top prospects at the deadline in order to make a last minute playoff run? It sounds like something a GM who is about to lose his job might do.....but that still would not justify such an action.

The preds could easily move a d-man:

Kevin Klein, Ville Koistenen, Alexander Sulzer, Teemu Laakso, Cody Franson.....all of these guys are fighting for the same spots. One of them could easily be moved.

Note: Devries is on the last year of his contract and will likely not be resigned. He could go first or simply not be resigned.

I think when Ryan Whitney returns to action, one of he, Alex Goligoski or Kris Letang MAY be moved.

I think Cody Franson has way more value than the rest of those guys, even though he's seen less time in the NHL.

I don't think either Letang or Gogo are going anywhere any time soon. Gonch is almost done (UFA after next season) so the Pens will need then and Whitney to be their 3 offensive/puck moving defensemen.

Shero will have to put somebody on the market if the team needs something at the deadline...and I think most of us agree that we will need more scoring from the wings.

Plus, there are more puck-movers on the way (Grant in particular) and I doubt the team wants to play without Gonchar beyond this season...unless he isn't anywhere close to the same player he was pre-injury.

Maybe I should have included Alex Grant and Carl Sneep on my original list, because it could be one of those guys who get moved instead.

Yeah, isn't he only really starting to come out of his shell now?

I remember seeing how kessel played and just assuming he was a 70-80pt guy, then I checked his stats and was SHOCKED!

Delayed developement due to being brought up too early?

The guy looks like a future superstar but his stats are awful.

True, they do have some good prospects. I guess it all depends on whether or not Satan/Feds/Sykora/Staal ect. start scoring more. If The Pens are scoring 3-4 goals a game at the deadline they probably won't move Letang or Gogo. However, if they are only scoring 1-2 goals a game, they could be packaged to bring in some scoring help.

I think it's totally about him not having a spot in the line-up. If we didn't have Lupul, I think Downie would be up here now.

He's keep Downie in the NHL now because, well, we don't need him now and this can screw with the kid going back and forth between teams

No pens fans said Letang, goligoski or Whitney? Assuming Whitney comes back and plays like he did 2 years ago one of those guys is a good bet to move with a pick/player for an under 30 winger. Whitney is on a great contract but i really think because of that he will be kept so maybe one of the other two. Letang is probably overrated by Gm's and could fetch alot.

Whoops nvm Jags did mention it. I read the post after and still didn't pick it up. Honestly, id say theres a good chance Gonchar resigns for 1-3 more years to help Malkin out a bit more.

I could see Svatos being moved if he doesn't start producing soon. He could probably benefit from a fresh start.

White or Colaicovo is a given.

Ladislav Smid if the return was good enough.

From the Habs, Halak, O'Byrne and possibly Higgins could be made available if there is an offer for a veteran or two that could put us over the top.

If you really want to put a list together look at whether teams are expecting to contend or not.

If a team has a lot of talent and is looking for "that missing piece" then they are more likely to move a young, talented player that isn't as vital to their lineup this season. Examples: Downie in Philadelphia, Halak in Montreal, even Staal in Pittsburgh I could see getting moved if it brought in a top-tier winger to play with Crosby.

On the other hand, don't expect rebuilding teams or organizations whose young players are the core of the team to be giving away young guys. Examples: the Islanders are not contenders so have no reason to move Okposo, the Coyotes invested the 3rd overall pick in Turris and he is a central part of their team, same with TJ Oshie in St. Louis or Jakub Voracek in Columbus.

The only real exception to this rule that I can see would be Jay Bouwmeester simply because he is due for a big pay day and it seems pretty clear that he will not re-sign in Florida so they will be looking to deal him (and the price will probably be very steep).

So they magically want to waive the cap and trade a guy that isn't on their cap for a player that will be against their cap? Yeah, brilliant. Hawks could see that Skille is getting ready to make the team as well as a few other wingers and because of the depth they have at the wing position, they could use that to bolster other area's the team isn't so strong at with depth. It could be centers or defensemen.
