Luongo

I’m not advocating the Canucks trade Luongo at this point in time (or ever), but if the opportunity presents itself in the future, what would other teams be willing to give up to get a top 5 goaltender?

Yes he has a NTC, and yes the Canucks have been waiting for a goalie like him for all of eternity, but if they are tanking it come the trade deadline and Schneider is still playing like one of the best goalies in the AHL, making Luongo available for the right price might be an option for Gillis.

Teams off the top of my head that could use a stud goalie…..Philly, St.Louis, Boston, Ottawa, Toronto, Carolina, Tampa, Washington, Phoenix, LA.

Edmonton and Colorado as well, but id hate to see that go down.

So what would teams be willing to offer up?

Send a message via AIM to Heaton
Luongo will obviously be traded for Jay Bouwmeester and Bryan Allen.

The problem is, there are so many good goalies in the league right now, that the value of a goaltender like Luongo (or anyone in the top 10) is much less than it would have been, say, ten years ago.

Don't expect other teams to be offering a lot.

A year ago, I would say that Montreal would have considered a package centred around Price. Now there is no chance of that.

Theoretically, if Luongo were on the block, I can't think of a package, all things considered (team needs, organizational depth, cap situation) that a team could offer that I would be happy with.

A team like LA who has been dying for a star goalie for years would break the bank to get Luongo.

well , lets hear what a breaking bank sounds like!i agree we have no need to trade lui but with schneider dominating at the minor level (yes i realize i said MINOR level) now might be the time to retool a little younger.trade the twins at the deadline and start new with a giant bank of money forr next year.and the giant crop of youth the sedins and lui could fetch.interested to hear some proposals.

No, no and no. The Los Angeles one might be close if you change Labarbera to Kopitar.

Anything from Ottawa not named Spezza/Heater/Alfie

Volchenkov ($2.5mil)
Gerber ($3.7mil)
Vermette ($2.7mil)
Lee/ Karlsson/ Smith
Ott or SJ 1st 09

total $8.9mil

for

Luongo ($6.75mil)
Ohlund (($3.5mil)

total $10.25mil

I'd hate to see A-Train go but to get a real number 1 would be the only way he ever moves off this team.

Ottawa gets the goalie they have always needed and an offensive minded dman

Vancouver gets a solid second liner, top pairing dman, a pick, a good prospect and a salary dump

I can't see Van city ever moving him (maybe because my team has never been blessed with a great goalie) because it seems retarded to me, but if they did decide to shop him i could be talked into this.

Terrible. All three of them. For a player ranked number three by NHL GMs on who they wanted to build their teams around, he would have much higher trade value than in the proposals you made.

i don't know about that, IF luongo was to be traded at the deadline, i'd definitely consider the philly offer (with carter, not hartnell, of course). luongo is 1 year away from UFA and haven't shown any sign to commit long term to this team. he is already highly paid and will definitely look for another raise. he had been inconsistent since the 07 playoff, playing great one night and average the next. to get a package that brings back a big scoring center, a decent veteran goalie (to tutor schneider and take some pressure off him), and a 1st in a deep draft, it is definitely a good starting point.
again, all this is based on the assumption that vancouver is struggling come march, and gillis decided to go with schneider and trade luongo at the deadline. i am in no way advocating a trade involving luongo from the canucks POV.

No from a vancouver stand point. No use throwing in Gerber if Vancouver already has Schneider.

We don't need to take on goalie prospects.

If we trade Luongo, it means we are probably going to give Schnieder the throne and will sign a veteran goalie in the offseason.

If it's not one of Spezza/Heatley/Alfredsson then we aren't talking a trade.

The Flames would offer Todd Bertuzzi.

But seriously, if Luongo were made available, he would earn a high return. If he was traded, the Canucks would also be essentially be a rebuilding team and a lottery draft pick. So, in the event he were traded, I would expect a future star player, a potential star player and a 1st rounder. A team like LA could essentially become a contender with a player like Luongo, I think they would help drive his price up on the trade market.

We all need to keep in mind that Luongo has a NTC and is unlikely to waive it to go to a team that will not compete or is an unpopular destination (Atlanta, Nashville, NYI, EDM etc)

I hate when people make proposals from teams from another conference. 95% of people have no idea how much value those players actually hold. Unless you know hockey to a tee, I'd stay away from making proposals cross-conference, you just embarass yourself. (This post targetted at many of above posts)
