I don't understand his lack of playing time overall, but last night he wasn't feeling well so that could explain why Humwick played a bit more.
Just me stirring the pot, but I wonder if they're showcasing the Hun? You can be sure if Chicago or another team was willing to move us a more established dman that they'd want a younger guy with upside back. The B's probably don't want to part with Lash, but I can see them moving Hunwick if need be.
We haven't dropped below .500 this year, I'm taking the SO losses as ties because they count as ties and the SO is a BS way to decide a game. But even the Red Wings cant make that claim starting the year with a loss, and this is the first time in what 6 years?
As an unheralded puck-moving defenseman in my friday night rec league, I wanted to comment more on Hunwick last night. Yes, he only played 9+ minutes, but I thought he looked good. Once, there was a guy pressuring him and he stopped short, let the forechecker go by and made a nice little pass to Chara, who sent a long pass up and eventually led to what I think was Thornton's scoring chance from the right side. In the third, he made a couple simple but well-executed passes behind his net to the partner that opened up some ice, which is essential to our gameplan. On the downside, another time he turned around the net and was met by two leafs who took the puck and Hunwick lost his stick briefly.
I think he looked good and I said it last night, he can play against the quicker teams while Hnidy can play against the tougher ones. Eventually, you might start seeing him carrying the puck up ice himself or immediately sending the puck out for a chance at an odd-man rush, something that happens far too seldom with this team.
My only concern is that at some point, our # 5 & 6 D's will have to play more than 10 minutes. I trust Julien but if this is all he trusts our bottom d-men, then maybe it is already time for PC to make a move b/c I don't want Chara & Wideman playing 30 minutes a night from November-April.
But Hunwick showed little to no rust last night and was very quick back into the zone. I'm sure he's also happy with that nhl paycheck.
