I seem to remember the gold symbol being presented during the Rangers 75th anniversary season, during the home opener. They had a ceremony that centered around "Pride. Tradition. Honor." or something like that.
Since it was Messier's return to the Rangers in 2000-2001, they used the symbol as a way to honor the past and get ready for the future.

If there is someone that can do a better job verifying this, please do.

As your resident "sign man", I'd be happy to sell replicas to anyone who's interested.

Seriously, would love to know the answer though. If that thing is solid brass, I imagine it weighs in at a few hundred pounds and costs more than my car.

i submitted this question to the 'ask hockey night live' page on MSG. Hopefully Al and Stan "the dinosaur" Fischler will answer the question. Stan was probably there when the gold was dug out of the ground back in the rush of '49

I might be able to find out since I know plenty of people who work with and for MSG.

Maybe I'm just an idiot, but wasn't this logo presented during the pregame ceremonies of Messier's first game back as a Ranger at MSG (against MTL, start of the 2000-2001 season)?

I vaguely remember all the former rangers coaches coming onto the ice, Clint Smith, some other former rangers, and the presentation of a few things, one of which I thought was the gold shield.

EDIT: Oh, someone beat me to it. At least I know I'm not crazy.
