Niskala traded to the Flyers

per TSN

For AHL enforcer Triston Grant and a 2009 7th.

No big loss, no big gain. I think this is the beginning of our paring down of defensive prospects.

Is Grant a Hordichuk replacement?

I don't think so, if he's taking up a roster spot, there's serious problems.

God we suck at getting value for our defensive prospects. A 7th round pick?

I guess I should not expect much since Niskala has an easy out in Europe, but man......a 7th round pick is almost valueless...

If we are going to get a tough guy that belongs in the AHL why not sign Steve MacIntyre. The guy destroys people he fights. Kevin Westgarth also would have been a good pick up. Why the **** did we make this move

Niskala is going to Russia so this is a fantastic deal for Nashville, getting something for essentially nothing...

no. he's. not.

he denied it.

as to the other question, Niskala is a classic offense-only defenseman, from what I've seen. If he could play defense, his value would have been substantially higher.

Translation of Niskala's signing from Hockeysverige.se

From what I can gather, Hockeysverige is a pretty solid source for European transactions. Why would they pick this up if there wasn't some ethos to it?

Grants pretty entertaining, he's not really a true hw or anything. He loves to throw big open ice hits, he actually killed penalties for the Phantoms, and was an alternate captain. He fought some HW's in the AHL, and Andrew Peters on his breif stop with the Flyers, but I really don't think he's capable of being a NHL enforcer.

I doubt he's a replacement for Hordichuk, but who knows.

Can we PLEASE find some other team to trade with? Let's let Philly actually build their own team.

Several Finnish sources have said that Niskala will play in Russia (where he would make 5x the money he gets from AHL), if he does not get a oneway contract to NHL.

Nashville lost virtually nothing, because there are plenty of guys that can add the same offensive value as Niskala and are at the same time better in the own zone. You have good prospect Laakso coming and Koistinen (who is more versatile overall than Niskala) was also told in the spring that Preds are interested in his services in the next season as well, so there is enough depth in this sector.

I remember one game in Kelowna, Tristen grant was trying to get Captain Josh Gorges into a fight, Shea Weber Grabbed Grant and gave him a great beating. Grant was the Big tough guy at the time and Weber just killed him. A steady diet of rights, Grant was taking them all and Weber took none.

It was great!

The Flyers are loaded on defense. Seven guys under contract plus Eminger and Jones (RFAs). He's going to Russia.

Niskala was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning today, in exchange for a 6th round pick.

Poor guy, I wonder how many days till he gets traded to Vancouver and has to pack all his stuff up again?

If Tampa doesn't give him a 1-way deal he's going to Russia

so the Flyers go through a whole lot of trouble to move their 7th round pick for a 6th round pick.

He will probably make that roster. I'm not sure how much Melrose will like him though....

how much did Hordichuk make? Is this really a step in a better direction?

Gratton is Hordichuk's replacement, not Grant. Grant is simply a body to fill in the Admirals lineup

you are telling me that the Preds told him they would offer him 50,000 to play for 1 year on the Admirals and he took it?

Either A) he is a moron

or B) he sucks so bad that he isnt worth any amount of professional athlete money...in which case remind me why we want him?

They probably told him the offer was 475K to play in Nashville and he would get the chance to show he can play in Nashville. The 50K for MIL was just an incentive to have him play better. He's an athlete. He probably thinks he will beat out Gratton and a number of other of our 4th liners and will be in Nashville.

Or he is just happy to be earning money at a level of play that is higher than the ECHL.
