If Kovalchuk agrees to sign long term than L.A would be crazy not to do either Jack Johnson and Oscar Moller for Kovalchuk or
Moller, Frolov for Kovalchuk.

Kovalchuk wants to play with his fellow Russian.

Johnson, Purcell, 2nd for Kovalchuk.

Frolov is a much more difficult beast to address. there currently isn't anyone within the organization close to being able to bring the type of game Frolov does.

I'd do the original trade 10 ways till tuesday. I really like Oscar Moller, and I mean really really like him, but Kovalchuk is a bonafide scoring machine. Get yourself a goalie, and this team is ready and rockin'!

Lets use the Jokinen trade as example....

Jokinen got Ballard, Boynton, and a 2nd.

Kovalchuk is most likely going to fetch more then Jokinen....at least is theory. I dont think Purcell would get it done as he hasnt shown he can be an NHL player.

Ballard is comparable to Johnson.
Boynton would be comparable to Gauthier.

So Johnson, Gauthier, Purcell and a 2nd for Kovalchuk and Exelby?
Not much of a deal there.

Purcell is a better prospect than Oscar Moller in my opinion, hence the reason why I used him instead of Moller.

go easy, pleasy!

i rather take him for free.... as UFA
like Gaborik.

If they wanna join the growing up Team, they are welcome as a UFA,
if they don't wanna be a Kingsplayer , its not worth it to trade for them....

k if you won't trade Johnson and Moller for a gamebreaker like Kovalchuk..you are drinking the kool aid, if you can get IK signed to an extension it's a no brainer.

I am probably on the minority of Kings fan to say that I don't think this is far off, maybe Atlanta add something. It would take a package similar to this to get Kovalchuk. maybe:

Kings: Kovalchuk, Pavelec

Atlanta: Frolov, Moller, Labarbera, #1 in 2010, #2 in 2009

Atlanta has Hainsey, Bogosian, and Enstrom locked up for a bit...why trade Kovalchuk for more defense even if JJ is excellent???

BTW, Kovalchuk is not going to be traded in the next year and a half, so all the speculation is goofy to put it mildly. Any one catch his recent quote where he said he wanted to apologize to the Atlanta fans for the poor start and that he promised that Atlanta is going to be a really good team and he thinks the talent is there.

Yeah, he really wants out. Especially if he gets the captaincy.

To Los Angeles: Ilya Kovalchuk, Brett Sterling, Niclas Havelid

To Atlanta: Patrick O'Sullivan, Kyle Calder, Denis Gauthier, Teddy Purcell, Alec Martinez, 2009 1st round pick (2009 top 7 protected, 2010 unprotected)

Calder & Gauthier are salary dumps who will come off the books at the end of the year.

Los Angeles recieves obviously the best player in the deal in Ilya Kovalchuk. Brett Sterling is a highly skilled local kid who they will give a shot and see if he can stick somewhere on one of the scoring lines. Niclas Havelid improves the clubs current defense.

Atlanta recieves Patrick O'Sullivan who they can slot in for Kovalchuk on the first line and will give him the oppertunity to be his teams go to guy. Teddy Purcell is a highly sought after young forward who put up great numbers for a rookie in the ahl and can play on a scoring line. The Kings deal from a position of strength with good young puck moving defenseman Alec Martinez who many thought had a great chance to make the Kings this year. Calder & Gauthier provide some leadership and are good enough to skate on the nhl roster this year and are upcoming free agents. The first round pick is a must in any Kovalchuk trade.

Mayyybe switch Martinez to Hickey if Purcell is removed.

Kovalchuk - Kopitar - Brown
Frolov - Stoll - Moller
Ivanans/Richardson - Handzus - Simmonds
Sterling - Boyle - Armstrong/Ivanans
Harrold

Johnson - Greene
O'Donnell - Doughty
Quincey - Havelid
Priessing
Harrold

Thanks for the vote of confidence...I think many here are badly underestimating Kovalchuks value particularly if he agree to an extension.

The overpayment of our prospect pool to get Ilya would be the opposite direction that Lombardi is going....

Realistically, Lombardi doesn't do a Kovy deal without an extension in place.

Moller, Hickey, and Boyle would be a starting point...

Don't forget that they received Christensen, Armstrong, Esposito, and a 1st for Hossa and Dupuis I think it was...

Moller, Hickey, Boyle, and a 1st? I don't think Kings fans would like that much, and...would Atlanta even go for this...Moller is NHL ready and prolly the best prospect in the bunch. Hickey's upside is probably that of a Wade Redden type but will ned up a Joe Corvo....Boyle is looking like Mark Parrish with the soft hands and the ability to finish around the net.

I'd rather wait for free agency when he goes to the highest bidder...Loktionov is looking really good in junior, and Voinov is also adjusting to north american hockey well...

The good thing is that L.A. can do a package like this and still have great prospects in the system...Martinez, Bernier, Simmonds, etc...

your last point is the whole reason to throw a feeler outer in the first place.

contrary to most of those stay the course people, there is a valid argument FOR making that trade earlier than later... when he (Lombardi) said he wouldn't have a problem with it.

when you look at the organization's depth from an optimistic point of view, you KNOW it's coming eventually.

As much as i'd love to have Kovalchuk (sp?) on the kings i'd rather Lombardi got a proven no1 goalie like Luongo first. Kovalchuk and Lehtonen would be nice :-)

Kovalchuk is young enough still to stay the course on Jonathan Bernier.

at some point, the players on the roster need to be rewarded for their diligence through a rough rebuild with little quantifiable reward outside of the group rate they're receiving on Kings' tattoos.

everything is a matter of the right timing and at some point Lombardi is going to have to demonstrate the same respect for his players that he's demanding from them.

and they need to put ***** in the seats.

this is a Jack Johnson proposal, so thank you for playing.

a knob can turn both ways, so there isn't any real need to be an ass... perhaps a simple heads up would've been a little less clownshoe.

Moller is 4 years younger and is playing in the NHL. He's even better over 4 years. In short: I have my doubts.

True, but I feel Purcell has the higher ceiling.

I do not see that. I think Oscar has the potential to be a 40 goal 90 point player.

The most I can ever envision Purcell getting it 30 / 70.

Possibly, but if Moller's potential was so high, was did he fall to the 2nd round?
