[PHI/TB] Flyers deal Downie and Eminger for Matt Carle

While the Flyers continue to wait for news from free agent winger Brendan Shanahan, they made a more critical move to strengthen their ailing defense, sending Steve Downie and Steve Eminger to Tampa Bay for 24-year-old defenseman Matt Carle.

According to a team source, the deal was made late Friday afternoon, and Carle is expected to be in uniform against his former team Saturday night. Carle, 6-foot, 210 pounds, was voted to the 2006-07 NHL all-rookie team while playing for San Jose. That season, he scored 11 goals and 31 assists. He was traded to Tampa Bay last season for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich.

Wow, that didn't last too long for Carle...I can see why Philly made this deal, but it may not turn out great for them if Carle can't find his stride and prove that he is a $3.5-million worthy D-man

Can Downie fight? If so I don't like dealing Carle but it was needed. Moving his contract is nice though.

Beyond awful deal for Philly. Carle has been horrible this year and was horrible last year.

The way the owner of tampa bay wants to go are very hard to seize.Trade Brad Richards to dallas to make some cap space for resign Dan Boyle. Resign Dan Boyle and a month later trade him to san jose for matt carle. And now trade matt carle to philly....

Hate to get rid of Downie, but I think Carle will be a nice chip to build around.

Owners / GM of TB really like dynasty mode in NHL games.

Good move for Philly. If he fired Stevens, he'd be the perfect GM, but for some reason that hasn't happened.

Anyways, what the **** is wrong with TB? This makes their D even worse! Trading Carle just takes away talent. Now their D is young, inexperienced and less talented than yesterday. Does TB management not realize how important a reliable, puck-moving defense is in today's NHL? This is another step in the wrong direction.

Tampa fans, how do you feel about all of the sudden changes the new ownership is making?

I thought Carle was the center piece of the Boyle trade? Was he originally included due to salary? I'm not necessarily sure if this is a bad trade but the timing seems terrible. I'm a firm believer that patience is key and Carle would have eventually replaced Boyle.

What is the career potential of Downie and Eminger? I'm from the left coast and don't know too much about either player.

I don't like it, but that's because I love the Downie style of hockey.
