Tampa is getting the better of this deal in the long term. They ditch a 3.4 million dollar cap hit for the next four years which would be going to at best a 2nd pairing defenseman and if his contract wasn't a factor, he would be playing 3rd pairing on most teams. That is not even close to being worth it.

Eminger is at the worst, slightly worse than Carle but is making 2 mil less. The Lightning will get more bang for their buck with Eminger than they will with Carle. Matt Carle also wasn't going to get any better when there was nobody there that could compliment his risky style when he is playing well.

Washington: Jeff Halpern, Matt Pettinger, Steve Eminger, Olaf Kolzig.
Don't forget the prospect they traded for from the Penguins.

its an insane asylum in tampa
I was listening to Leafs Lunch podcast a few days after that alleged incident. It was being reported that Len Barrie came into the room and was drawing up Powerplays. First, how Len Barrie ever got enough juice or cash to be in any way shape or form and owner is beyond me. Second, Leafslunch had Barry Melrose on and he flat out denied the incident happened. Something along the lines of "I don't know waht you're talking about".

If it wasn't for the salary difference, I'd like him a bit more than Eminger, too. And maybe he can be salvaged. I don't think much of Eminger, either.

But I don't see why Philly gives up on Downie at this point. As much of a headache as he is, he's going to be a very good NHL forward, and I would have thought he'd have much more market value than this.

That would be Sersen after they played against his team in Europe i believe. Tampa is just cracked out though, from their signings in the summer to the trades they've made since then to now.

Michal Sersen.

he's a 24 year old defensemen. See Coburn is 100% right. The kid has the ability to be a stud, and he's young so he can turn it around instantly. He's 210lbs 6 foot....I like what i see. We have an extremely young defense coburn, sbisa, carle, parent, jones.... I like it

Are people going to say that EVERY TIME the Flyers acquire a young defenseman? If it works once, it doesn't mean it'll work again.

Carle never showed the potential that Coburn did as a youngster. The fact that Carle is on his third franchise in less than 5 calendar months speaks volumes.

I just think this is a deal of two teams trading under-performing assets.

That's the problem. We don't have any. We have Vaananen and Timonen. After that it's Kukkonen (won't be used unless one of the guys ahead of him is dead), Sbisa (18YO), Coburn (underachieved).

Carl is not terrible, he's just on a terrible defensive team that just got worse. He was solid with San Jose. Good move for Philly

Since Tampa likes to make deals, how about Downie to Toronto for Colaiacovo?

he doesn't because he's more important, or was, to the flyers than anyone else. and they ****ed it up.

That double counts assets though. Doesn't make much sense to say they traded away Boyle AND Carle/SJ's 1st because those assets were acquired by trading Boyle. If you do you're basically including two trades' worth of players out of TB but only one trade's worth of players back.

It should actually be:

Traded:
Boyle
Lukowich
Kuba
Picard
3rd rounder

Recieved:
Meszaros
Wishart
4th rounder
4th rounder
Downie
Eminger

dude this isnt as bad as it looks because its not accurate...Carle was traded and received so he shouldnt be on the list as it cancels out... i dont know the details of the trades so there might be some more things that need to be changed along these lines, but that simple change makes it look a lot better for Tampa

His rookie year, and even that was debatable. He has offensive instincts but was pretty bad in his own end

Matt Carle :

2006-07 San Jose NHL 77 11 31 42 +9 30 111 9.91

Remember this season! you now have the reason why the Flyers take a chance with the young defenseman.

They picked the right two teams to try and plunder, but when they separated the wheat from the chaff, they took the chaff.
