Ha...!

Well, during the last expansion draft, there were 28 teams, and only 26 teams needed to protect players. 30 teams may allow a better lineup.

I know in the 1999 expansion draft 1st and 2nd year pros were excluded. I believe this was the same case in 2000.

The key difference is that cutoff includes pro seasons in the AHL. So teams would have to protect important prospects in their 3rd AHL seasons like New Jersey did with Colin White in 1999. Or rookies making the NHL in their 3rd season.

Phoenix (using the 1/2nd year pros exempt from previous expansion drafts)

key exempts: Mueller, Turris, Boedker, Tikhonov, Hanzal, Porter, MacLean, Ross, Ahnelov, Gistedt, Kolarik

Protected:
Ilya Bryzgalov

Shane Doan
Olli Jokinen
Steven Reinprecht
Daniel Carcillo
Daniel Winnik
Enver Lisin
Alex Bourret
Garth Murray
(maybe) Todd Fedoruk**

Ed Jovanovski
Derek Morris
Zbynek Michalek
Keith Yandle
Kurt Sauer

Available with experience:
Michael Tellqvist

Joel Perrault
Brian McGrattan
(maybe) Todd Fedoruk**

David Hale
Matt Jones

Other Exposed AHLers:
Al Montoya
Josh Tjordman
Logan Stephenson
Jeff Hoggan
Ryan Landon
Francis Lessard
Steven Goertzen
Derek Nesbitt
Dave Spina

**Due to the requirement of offering two experienced NHL forwards it might be necessary to offer Fedoruk. More likely the team would simply acquire an expendable veteran player though. Perrault and McGrattan may or may not reach the minimum experience requirements.

honestly not sure which of Eaves and LaRose they would end up protecting. If Eaves didn't start the season the way he did he would be the easy choice but he really struggled early this season, lost his ice time, and guys like LaRose and Bayda have stepped up in the scoring department. I ended up going with Eaves due to the contract he has an his upside.

San Jose Sharks:

Protected:
G - Evgeni Nabokov
D - Dan Boyle
D - Christian Ehrhoff
D - Marc-Edouard Vlasic
D - Douglas Murray
D - Rob Blake
F - Joe Thornton
F - Patrick Marleau
F - Devin Setoguchi
F - Milan Michalek

F - Mike Grier

Unprotected:
G - Brian Boucher

F - Tomas Plihal

If first and second year pros are exempt, that would put Joe Pavelski, Torrey Mitchell, Devin Setoguchi, and Tomas Plihal in the exempt column and then Marcel Goc would be protected leaving the required two experienced forwards in Jody Shelley and Jeremy Roenick unprotected.

Minnesota:

Backstrom
Harding

Schultz
Burns
Johnsson

Koivu
Miettinen
Brunette
Belanger
Bouchard
Nolan
Gaborik

Exempt: James Sheppard, Colton Gillies, Benoit Pouliot, Erik Reitz

Available:
Krys Kolanos
Derek Boogaard
Craig Weller
Martin Skoula
Marek Zidlicky
Marc-Andre Bergeron
Tomas Mojzis

I think I did this correctly, but I just can't see Minnesota giving up either one of Backs/Hards, and outside of the 3 D listed the rest are expendable. The Wild are saved by the youth exemption big time tho.

G) Martin Brodeur
D) Johnny Oduya
D) Paul Martin
D) Bryce Salvador
D) Andy Greene
D) Anssi Salmela
f) Zach Parise

G - Kevin Weekes
D - Sheldon Brookbank
D - Colin White
D - Mike Mottau
F - David Clarkson
F - Jay Pandolfo
F - Mike Rupp
F - Bobby Holik

I think Las Vegas and Winnipeg should be used.
Vrana has played three years in the minors and now is in his rookie year in the NHL so I don't think he's exempt. Same with Bergfors. Salmela would be exempt because it's his first year ever in North American professional hockey. The Devils would replace Salmela with Colin White (I wouldn't as I really want to get rid of him).

Kings have a lot of rookies/minor league players, so this only leaves:

Labarbera
Calder, Richardson, Armstrong, Zeiler should remain unprotected, along with Gauthier.

Damnit, and I'd worked this out for Columbus not too long ago, but misplaced it...

The detailed rules from 2000 can be found here.

The juicy bits w/r/t experience and exemption:

Quote:
ONE GOALTENDER --
For clubs protecting one goaltender, no experience requirement.
For clubs protecting two goaltenders, either 10 NHL games played in the
1999-2000 season or 25 NHL games played over the last two seasons (1998-99
and 1999-2000).

A goaltender must have played in a minimum of 31 minutes in a game before it
would qualify as a game played for these purposes.

Games played include regular season and playoff games.

ONE DEFENSEMAN --
Either 40 NHL games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 NHL games played
over the last two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000).
Games played include regular season and playoff games.

TWO FORWARDS - Either 40 NHL games played in the 1999-2000 season or 70 NHL
games played over the last two seasons (1998-99 and 1999-2000).

Games played include regular season and playoff games.

Exempt from the Expansion Draft are (i) all first and second-year pros and
(ii) unsigned draft choices (except unsigned draft choices drafted from
European clubs in the 1996 Entry Draft or before and who remain unsigned).
(emphasis added - it's not "rookies", but rather based on the status of your pro contract - and I believe that includes the AHL as well.)

So, for Columbus:

EXEMPT:
Brassard (just barely)
Voracek
Filatov
Mason
Russell (didn't sign a pro contract for a while )

GOALTENDING PROTECTED:
Leclaire

GOALTENDING EXPOSED:
LaCosta (just barely)
Norrena

DEFENSE PROTECTED:
Tyutin
Hejda
Klesla
Methot
OKT or Commodore

DEFENSE EXPOSED:
Backman
Commodore or OKT

FORWARDS PROTECTED:
Nash
Huselius
Umberger
Chimera
Peca
Malhotra
Murray
Dorsett
Boll

FORWARDS EXPOSED:
Modin
Novotny
Picard
Torres

I couldn't make up my mind on which was more protection-worthy - OKT or Commodore. Cap-wise, OKT wins, but Commodore has quietly been improving all this time. I suspect in such a scenario OKT would be traded for something of value beforehand so we could protect Commie and not lose one of the two of them for nothing (Commie's contract makes him untradable).

Also, the only prospects research I bothered to do was merely to verify that Andrei Plekhanov and Maksim Mayorov were exempt (they are). Beyond that, I haven't really looked.

Our ideal scenario would be Picard and Backman being the two goners. But that would only happen if MacLean was tapped for one of the expansion franchises.

EDIT: Also forgot to mention that there's other ways of keeping folks away from players. For example, San Jose traded both Minnesota and Columbus various prospects and picks in exchange for agreements to not select Evgeni Nabokov.

Well it seems players are exempt in their first 2 years of pro-contracts according to the earlier post. So that would mean Schenn and Kulemin don't count (not sure about Grabs or Mitchell). So I'd guess the Leafs would then protect Finger and one of Moore or Meyers.

All depends on if they would re-sign Seidenberg or not. Wallin's getting up there in years and, despite his excelent play this year, I'm not sure I could see them leaving any of those other 5 exposed if contract isn't an issue.

It's funny really. Before this season Canes fans would have a hard time finding 5 defensemen even worth protecting on our roster, but Wallin, Seidenberg and Babchuk have really stepped it up.

I started doing the Caps one but realized that I have no clue what teh Caps would do.

Personally I'd leave players unprotected like Nylander, Morrisonn, Erskine, Bradley unprotected because I feel they are overpaid and want them to be taken away.

To clarify: playing in the AHL under an NHL contract counts towards 1st/2nd year exempt status. It's not just NHL seasons.
