it was one of the best hockey games I have seen in a while. Babcock is gonna rip his team apart. you could see it from his reaction on the bench

True, but babcock's timeout was stupid. 30 seconds left and your team is reeling in it's own end ok I can understand. But you don't rest Crosby Malkin and company, not to mention a chance to draw up a play.

I dunno. It doesn't seem right so see a Flyers fan go nuts when the Pens score.

Tim P's column from a few minutes ago:

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The metamorphism of John Stevens’ personality has begun.

This is not the kinder, gentler Stevens who succeeded Ken Hitchcock.

Rather, it’s the nastier, “I’ll embarrass you in front of your teammates,” Stevens no one has seen.

The personality shift began by dropping Joffrey Lupul to the fourth line this week, causing the winger to grumble aloud about his demotion and lack of ice time.

The shift continued Tuesday afternoon at Nassau Coliseum when Stevens did something unprecedented as the Flyers’ coach – he benched Scott Hartnell the entire third period during a 3-1 victory over the Islanders that snapped a three-game losing skid.

Center Danny Briere did not finish the game with an apparent groin pull.

Briere’s injury was secondary to the message Stevens was sending to his struggling, often complacent hockey club which began the season 0-3-3 and has been inconsistent since.

“It didn’t look like he wanted to play tonight so, we went another direction,” Stevens said of Hartnell, an eight-year veteran. “I didn’t like his game. I didn’t think he was moving his feet. I thought [Andreas] Nodl was going. And then [Arron] Asham moved up and we got more jump in our game.

“Scotty is a good player. We’re going to need Scotty to get where we’re going, but I don’t think he was going … for two periods there … We were spending too much time in our own end and I shuffled the lines a bit.”

not the most skilled guys, but they are affected and work hard. hard work gets rewarded. hartnell and loops have been lazy.

Can't always be a country club... not working hard, don't see the ice. Seems fair to me.

hopefully it lights a fire under them.

if stevens wanted to reward players that work hard then upshall wouldn't be in his dog house. i cant figure why he gets no special team time. I always thought him and carter would be a good pk pair, but maybe its because of their success on 4v4

Look, taking one bad penalty deserves a yell. Two bad penalties deserves benching.

If Hartnell didn't bring his all this game, I am 100% behind benching his ass. Where has be been the past few games???

If Lupul is playing like ****, demote him to 4th line seems a little extreme, but hey, if you don't like it TOUGH. You are set to make 4 million next season and you look like **** on the ice. Step it up man. This is what you do for a living.

Benching Hartnell and lowering Lupul's ice time is not why I'm tired of John Steven's. Those are good moves and any coach who is worth anything would make those decisions.

What I hate is the apparent lack of a system beyond dump and chase and play your own style of hockey.

What I hate is the STUPID line shuffling and breaking up the pairs of guys who work well together.

I'm not talking the Gagne-Richards-Briere line, I'm talking breaking up

Coburn-Timonen
Richards-Lupul
Upshall-Carter

Oh, and anyone who puts Metro with Gagne is just FAIL.

At least he can make a few small good moves like punishing top 6 forwards.

Let's just hope he stops sucking at his job and comes up with a solid system. Or lets someone else do it while he plays a role other then Flyers Head Coach.

I honestly see this as an indication that Stevens has lost the lockerroom. He's lost the team and the players aren't going to listen to him anymore. I think the team will continue to struggle and we'll see a coaching change before Christmas, possibly in the next 2 weeks.

Maybe this isn't Stevens being stupid.
Sooner or later someone has to question Richards' leadership as well, I think.

Well, isn't it obvious??? He's clearly not doing enough with just leading the team in points, playing the PP and PK, scoring short-handed goals, leading all forwards in TOI, only being an even player in +/- when we actually have 3 guys who are a plus for the season, come on, you all know that's not enough for a captain. They MUST do more than just lead by example. Richards is captain, HE should be telling everyone on the ice how to play and what their job is. It's not the coaches job to coach, it's the captains right???

Yup. It's not going to be pretty. Has this team given you any confidence that they can hang with the elite? Didn't think so. I envy your optimism, however.

I love the benching, Hartnell wasn't doing very much out there. However where is the Knuble benching? Coburn was brutal against Edmonton, and Carter coasted a couple of times on Defense. Where are these benchings? Jones and Vandermeer last year?

we trade Hartnell and this team is soft as a pillow. It would be a bad mistake despite his salary.
Hartnell is still and will always be better then Tom Kostopoulos
