I felt this coming, even though it was an elbow... I don't think it was as ugly as it looked.

Missed the game last night but just saw the elbow on TSN. What was Pock thinking? That was ridiculously intentional. He actually stretched an extra stride to throw that elbow. Unbelievable.

I really don't know what Pock was thinking on the play. He's a quiet guy, we haven't seen him throw a big hit and he never gets involved with the rough stuff. Really bizarre and out of character for him. It looked really deliberate too, he really stuck his arm way out there.

I kind of hope he gets more than 2 games. I'm not a fan of his and that was a really nasty play, could have took his head off. This is a chance for the NHL to actually show the difference between a legal shot to the head and a deliberate one.

Also, I wish someone would address that player that Streit hit from behind during the 2nd period. That could have been really bad. This was a perfect example of a player putting themselves in a bad spot and getting destroyed. That player was really lucky because at the last second he turned and had his head level with the dasher.

But because there was no injury on the play, no one will talk about it and then when someone gets hurt they will talk about how to fix the situation and the cycle starts over again. If you want to prevent hits like that, address the behavior of the player being hit as well. Sorry for the derail but the mum in attention over the situation is driving me nuts.

I hope they suspend him for the rest of the season. Not because the hit deserves that... but because it would prevent him from putting on an Isles uniform for the rest of the year.

Very good TSM! Total agreement!

Seriously though, all hits to the head like this one should be dealt with firmly so they are significantly cut down. I agree that it is out of character for Pock to play dirty but not to play stupid. I've seen enough of Pock. No place for cheap shots - even if unintentional - in the game. The players have to be protected. 20 game minimum will keep guys from making boneheaded plays like this.

Maybe I'm just getting older or that I have kids around some of these guys ages but I cringe more and more at some of the hits I see into the boards that are perfectly legal. The players of today are on average 20% bigger and faster than they were 20 years ago. I worry about serious head/neck injuries and am amazed (and thankful) that they don't happen more frequently.

It really is something that needs to be completely taken out of the game. Institute a zero tolerance policy if they have to.

I know myself, when I am going for a puck in the corner facing the boards, it is ALWAYS in the back of my mind. You can't escape it. It's an unfortunate part of the sport.

5 games is a bit more than I expected, but its good that the nhl is starting to send a message, now they just have to get consistent. Pock won't be missed.

Stupid and dirty play which deserves a suspension. 5 is too much IMO. It should have been more in line with your numbers Mac, probably 2.

OT - Watched the highlights on TSN (online) to see the elbow again. Two things that stuck out to me were Kyle "Ock-poso" scored our first goal and apparently Trent 'Green' scored our second goal. This is a Canadian sports network?!?

My feelings as well. Same as the elbow Ruutu threw the other night...if not less dangerous...IMO at least.

Cant believe he got 5.

****, maybe Trent "Hunter" can play QB this Sunday! Trent Green is a pretty good athlete I see, football and hockey.

Ruuttu only got 2 games, correct? That's where I got that number. And Ruuttu is a repeat offender. The NHL is a weird governing body. nothing is ever consistent.

i think its trying to make an example with a struggling team and a borderline NHL player...the discipline has never been consistent in the NHL.

More than I thought he'd get. Look at the bright side, Pock can't do any damage from the pressbox.

Although it was virtually the same hit in the NHL's recent video against violent hits they mentioned that injury would be a factor in determining suspensions. I think Pock got 5 games because of the concussion to Shannon whereas Ruutu's hit didn't injure the player.

It surprises me that some feel five games is too much. I promise that if it was KO or Bailey taking that elbow most here would be screaming bloody murder and looking for a bigger suspension. I do agree that consistency in suspensions needs to be addressed. If I was "king" I'd say any hits to the head deemed penalty worthy the offender gets automatic 10 games with a possibility for more. Repeat offenders get double the last suspension. Period.
