Melrose on CBC : TB would be 1st in Division if they could score

Melrose says that it's not fair to blame the D because they have one of the lowest GAA in the league (verification need). The problem is up front, with players like Lecavalier and Saint-Louis not starting the season hot. He also uses Vrbata as an example of a guy who hasn't scored in 40 games.

I have to agree with the guy on those points.

Meh, that whole interview he was just pointing fingers left right and centre. I'm sure he's upset about the situation but he talks about people not being accountable then rails off that interview...

I was surprised by his openess. Seems like he holds a grudge against the owners and doesn't care about being "professional".

would you rather have seen the standard pr'd out talking points to say nothing interview?

he spoke his mind. he said the ownership was giving him direction on ice time for players. thats interesting.

They were not being professional with him, why should he return the favor?

he looked pissed when Maclean called him a dinosaur and old school and that his ilk is antiquated in today's NHL.

I hate how teams are quick to dump head coaches in today's sports.give them a chance!!!having a revolving door like this is an indictment on the organization itself.

Utter nonsense, Melrose shows a lack of respect for his divisional foes when he makes these kind of silly statements.

Um. I think he's got a pretty legit point. They've scored more than 3 goals ONCE this season. If they could score, they'd be right up there.

There's legit arguements, and then there's doing it just for the sake of disagreeing because it's a team in your division.

Seriously, it is kind of like saying if we had won all of our games we would have been 1st in the Division.

The fact is that the Lightning don't have the kind of offensive or defensive talent on their team as Washington, who is building a rather sizeable lead on everyone else in the SE Division right now.

Any team would be better if they could score more goals, right? It sounds like excuse making than anything else.

Meh, I think it was a good interview. He spoke his mind, the scoring on the team has not been outstanding, and his defensive stat was true. The ownership obviously was meddling in his coaching and was telling him how to run his team. Kudos to Melrose for sticking to his guns even though he knew he would be fired for going against ownership.

There's a huge difference between the examples you use and what Melrose is talking about. Mod Edit: deleted. Of course if you win every game you'll take your division, but scoring goals doesn't ensure a damn thing. Look at Tampa last year, they could have scored all they wanted but that defense, system and goaltending wasn't going to let the offense be much of a factor.

This year however, goaltending has held them in contention for many games they didn't deserve to be in. Tampa has lost a few 1 goal games and a few overtime games. 5 more goals in this 16 game stretch, this could be a totally different season.

So. I'll just agree to disagree with you.

He told the truth, he was not given a fair shake, I remember when the ducks hired Carlyle and they were just off to a brutal start, they had lost 7 or 8 games in a row, but they were patient and eventually he led them to a cup...Vrbata, Malone..epic fails, somehow that's Melroses fault? No.

Going in to the season it seemed like everyone on the boards thought Tampa would have no problem scoring goals, it would be preventing goals that would be their main concern. In reality it has been the opposite which is rather strange.

talk about bizzaro world.. with the firepower they have up front and from their defense, you'd think this'd have been another Penguins (mid 90's) team..

He stood up repeatedly for the "wonder twins" (owners) during the season... a bit surprising to hear him now... Barry's a good guy and a decent coach.. hope he gets another chance

35.7.

Shots against per game.

Tampa Bay Lightning.

Melrose couldn't get the offense going, and the team was being completely outplayed every game. They were terrible both defensively and offensively. He's a ****** coach, and that's why he got fired.

They would also be better if they had anything that resembles a system instead of five guys playing their own game.

It will be nice to have an actual coach rather than a name who the only thing he has done is make the local media laugh with a few zingers.

i cant stand barry melrose, but any team averaging 2 goals per game is going to lose more than they win. considering their GPG, their record is somewhat decent

Reading the interview on NHL.com, i feel really bad for Barry. Too bad his coaching style didnt translate to the NHL.
