Why do the Rangers always play more games than everybody?

This is like the 4th year in the row, maybe longer - that I have noticed this...

The Rangers always play like 3 or four more games than everyone else in the regular season. I can always count on it, the Pens have 3 games in hand, and I automatically knew it was gonna happen that way.

It is every year. However, I'm pretty sure this did not need a thread, but maybe it did?

Anyway thought on the issue?

your wording on this is really weird.

Anyway, as a Ducks fan i understand, it always seems we have played like 2-5 more games played than everyone else. It sucks.

Didn't both the Rags and Ducks have games in Europe this year?

Those games were like a full week before the regular season started.

Does that mean they get more points at the end of the season?

I don't know why it's like this, it's the way the schedule is planned. The habs on the other hand so far had something like 2 or 3 five or more days breaks. Kinda weird.

I know..

What I mean is through the regular season. The Rangers always have like 3 or 4 more games played than everyone else, it'll even out in the end of course, but you get what i'm saying..

edit--

Yes, I also noticed this about the Ducks as well..

early on it means you'll have less games to play down the stretch. you should be happy about that

Are you kidding? A heavy early schedule is the best thing possible for potential playoff teams.

True, but it's hard to compare and judge things like stats and points when you always have played more games played.

The Ducks did last year, not sure about the Rags.

Hmm no idea. Do the Rangers often do the European trip thing?? I would imagine so, since they are the largest market in the US and would attract more fans abroad because of it...?

I guess it has something to do with the MSG. Maybe they have more events coming in February, March, April so they play more in the early winter.

The Rangers have since I started following them closely in the mid 90's played the most games in the league early, or atleast been one of the teams with the most games.

And like someone speculated above, its probably something with the MSG.

It's the Circus and the chance that the Knicks might make the playoffs.

It's because MSG is pretty much booked solid between the Rangers, Knicks, NIT, and the Circus in March. So the Rangers end up playing a lot of games early in the season as a result.

Back in the days of the old MSG if the Rangers made he playoffs they would have to play their games in Toronto because of the Circus.

Rather have their sched early in the year so they can get rdy for the playoffs and rest more when they arrive.

The Habs have had almost 2x1 week rest periods and it really throws off the timing.

Why wouldn't they just have a home heavy early schedule if MSG booking was a problem? I mean, it works out well for the team, but for a more balanced 82 game span, why not make the majority of the home games early in the season, and avoid the MSG scheduling problems? The NHL does things in a very weird way, but hey I'm not going to complain, a lighter stretch at the end of the season is great.

Every team plays 82, this thread is silly. The reasoning behind it has already been stated by Ranger fans in relation to the MSG.

Larry Brooks about 5 years ago said that another reason for the front loaded schedule (not true now) was that back in the early part of this decade and the late 90s the Rangers were always a veteran laden team and wanted to have an easier schedule on the vets late in the season.
