For me the only other good thing about Sopel is it lets us walk away (hopefully) from Jurina. So the full cap change is $Sopel - $Nyls - $Jurcina which I think is ~2.5M.

I'll check the salary thread and edit later.

edit: looks like 3.3M savings

4875k + 881k - 2500k = 3256k

Here's a few of the trade rumours involving the Capitals I've heard over the years:

Hatcher for Yzerman
Juneau for Brian Savage
Gonchar for Mikael Tellqvist, Carlo Coliacovo and a #1 pick
prospects and picks for Scott Gomez
And of course everyone's all time favorite: Ovechkin to Nashville

Too many more to list

Total number of rumours that came true: 0
Percentage of rumours that came true: 0%

So why is this one going to come true? There's so many reasons why it won't, first and foremost being the cap problems that beset both teams

This is the first rumor about the Caps that I can remember that A. makes sense and B. has some teeth to it.

It doesn't make sense, again from a cap standpoint, and also it's toothless. Most of these rumourmongers are just idle hockey writers who can't think of anything to actually write about, so make stuff up, or take things out of context. I have no doubt that Chicago inquired about Nylander, but that doesn't mean, not by a long shot, that this deal is anywhere near fruition, despite but Chicago sportswriters and Bob McKenzie say

Because he wanted to go to the Rangers in the first place. That was well known before he was traded to the Caps. That one doesn't count by my standards

Nice.

How about a list of all the rumors that have actually come true?

Or how about you let fans debate the validity of the Nylander situation without broadstroking everyone with this ********?

I wonder how long opposing GM's make us stew in our cap strapped situation... seeing the injury bugs just starting to hit, they'd be fools to deal with us now. They should wait and try to force GMGM to make deals he doesn't want to make. George wanted a stacked roster at the expense of no cap room, and we got it. It's only November, so the GM's that want to pluck guys off our roster can wait. If injuries decimate our roster, we can't. I hope GMGM learned a lesson. He is lucky Mo is ready tonight.

Well played!!!!!!

If a Nylander deal does somehow come to reality ( ) something like this might work. Nylander would be a bigger salary dump so Hawks would want something of value with it.

So lets say in a month or 2 Huet doesn't suck anymore and Hawks decide to trade Khabibulin (). Hawks lack young defensive talent in our system. Our NHL roster is stacked with yound dman but aside our cupboard is not so full in AHL, ECHL, etc.

So how about a deal like this!

To Hawks
C Micheal Nylander.
D Keith Seabrook

To Caps
D Brent Sopel
7th round pick

Chicago still is looking to clear up space before trading. If only someone really wanted Martin Havlat...

It's probably nothing but neither Byfuglien nor Sopel are in the lineup tonight for Chicago. Reportedly Byfuglien has some sort of minor injury causing a late scratch and Sopel has been a healthy scratch before and had a minor undisclosed injury a week or two ago.

I could see Washington including Seabrook the younger. I'm not sure he's done enough thus far to warrant a contract with the Caps, especially once (assuming he signs) Finley and Carlson join the mix next season.

anyone hearing anything in Washington? During the intermission it seemed like Bolland was saying goodbye to Byfuglien before Edzo cut him off...

I think GMGM could probably get more out of a deal than just the 7th, but I have no problem with the premise of that deal. Seabrook is pretty far down our depth chart I think, even though he is pretty good. GMGM's a wizard at trading though, so if something like that happens more is probably coming back to the Caps.

Nothing here. They don't have enough healthy bodies not to have Nylander in the lineup tonight unless they wanted to not ice a full roster.

Byfuglien for Nylander wouldn't clear enough cap space for Chicago unless they were to either include Sopel, deal him elsewhere or put him on waivers.

which might be why the trade wouldn't be able to be announced until after the game tonight, and is why Edzo would cut off Bolland...

Would this get Chicago under the Cap?

Nylander for Bufflin, then Chicago waives Sopel?

Yeah, sure seems like it. You could maybe say that he was scratched for precautionary reasons and that a deal was close but those comments make it appear as though something has been finalized...just not announced.

As I said, Sopel would need to be dumped too and if Sopel is packaged with Byfuglien then Washington would need to clear out a bit of salary...likely Milan Jurcina (!!!).

Sopel + Byfuglien seems like a more likely path to clear salary than the Khabibulin or Havlat options.

Nylander+2nd round pick, for Byfuglien and Sopel?

Maybe the Caps could throw in a prospect?

Caps then waive Jurcina and get under the cap.

You could also clear a little room by trading Fehr for a pick. With Buf, he's redundant.
