So far in this young season, Pittsburgh has played 17 games. Of those, they're 5-4 in regulation and 6-2 in overtime/shootouts.

Phoenix, on the other hand, is 8-8 in regulation and 0-0 in overtime/shootouts.

I'm not going anywhere with this; I just thought it was a bit odd.

The NHL did something even dumber than getting rid of ties. They should have eliminated ties and just kept Wins and Losses for stats. That's it.

There should be no points awarded in over time, why should a team get awarded 1/2 a point for losing in overtime or just getting to overtime? I also want them to get rid of the way the standings are, divisional leaders are ranked 1-3...that's stupid. It should be whomever has the most points.

Almost all those OT games are games Pittsburgh should have lost, if not for some late heroics.

Pittsburgh is good for "slacking" off then using offensive capacities which I always say rival the Death Star's to score in bunches. This often results in a tie in regulation.

Whats the record for come from behind wins in a row? Pittsburgh has 4-5 right now going... And their record is BETTER trailing after 2 then leading. Crazy really.

Which is not a good thing, as we are giving away points to opposing teams which wouldn't happen if the team plays hard and wins in regulation.

Those OT games for pittsburgh were and still are the source of much frustration for pens fans.

Not sure, but that have 4 in a row so far. They also lead the league with 6 wins when trailing after 2 periods, I think the next team has 3.

Doesn't it work just the same? I haven't played in a while but I thought that if a game went to OT and the game was still tied afterwards going into shootout, it counted as a tie.

I think they should just end the game if the difference in score is more than 2 after the third.

Again, misguided fans posting drivel about the point system in a thread that has very little to do with it. Fantastic.

In other news, the only big four sport left allowing ties had a tie yesterday.

NHL, you suck. You have "eliminated" the tie and now FOOTBALL has taken it and made it their own.

I completely agree .. back in the day, teams played a conservative game for the point. It was better to sit back and keep the one point for a tie than to risk going for two points and making a blunder and costing you the point you had.

Now it seems like a lot of teams play to keep the other team from getting the point (especially since the schedule heavily favours intra-conference play). With today's parity, giving a conference opponent the extra point can bump them up a few spots in the standings, and you down a few spots, so there's still motivation to play a conservative defensive game.

I'd ditch the shootout and make overtime longer (10 minutes - maybe 20), with the results final at the end of the extra frame. Two points for a win, zero for a loss, zero for a tie. Then and only then will it be detrimental to play a conservative game in the final few minutes of regulation in a close/tied game, and in overtime.

I've been pushing this same basic idea for the last eight months! A partner in crime! (see my posts in the Points system thread for more details, etc etc)

BTW there's a required rule change involved - you have to make goals scored with the empty net not count. See the rulebook for the current lame rule they use.

With the current scoring system, Pittsburgh is 2nd in the east in points with 24 (of a possible 34)

With the 3-2-1-0 proposed scoring system, they'd be 5th with 29 points (of a possible 51).
