Martin Brodeur Out 3-4 Months

Elbow surgery. I know this is a Flyers board, but this has huge implications on us.

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=254775&l...s=topStory_nhl

Quote:
Martin Brodeur's assault on the record book will be put on hold as the Devils' goalkeeper will undergo elbow surgery and will be out of the lineup for up to four months.

“This Thursday morning, Martin Brodeur will undergo surgery to repair the distal bicep in the left elbow," Devils president, CEO and general manager Lou Lamriello said in a statement.

“We will not have any further comment or update until after the surgery is complete.”

Brodeur suffered the injury during the second period of Saturday's Devils victory over the Atlanta Thrashers with what was described as a "bruised elbow." He left the arena without talking to the media and was listed as day-to-day by the team.

I'm sure the Devils will compensate better than people expect but, damn, that's a huge blow to their season.

They'll be fine...Weekes won't be great, but he isn't crap either. So they should be able to tread water while Brodeur is out, and they'll get him back in time of the stretch drive.

I get the feeling the Devils aren't sunk yet. Brodeur has always been the backbone of that team, but they are still the Devils and how many years do they just find ways to hang around? They're not going to take off, but I don't think that they'll be bad enough that they're looking at Tavares/Hedman

How will Weekes perform playing more games in 2 weeks then Marty lets him usually play in an entire season.

Marty sits like 5 games a year. This is awesome for us.

He's played a lot of games previously in his career...it's not like he's some rookie who has never carried a load. He's a competent veteran backup...are they going to be hurt in the exchange of Broduer to Weekes? Absolutely...will Weekes destroy their season by being in net more? His history says no...he'll be alright.

Fantastic news. Hopefully this will be the year the Devils finally drop out of the playoffs.

It's not just Brodeur. Holik Rolston are also out. Martin is day to day and Green is out as well..

Devils will have 4 "easy games" this month but in December their schedule is no joke.

IMO they will be struggling for the 8th spot in the east by the time Marty comes back. Weekes isnt terrible but they really rely on scoring a goal or two and just letting Brodeur shut the door the rest of the way and when teams look down the ice and see whos in net trailing 2-1 going into the 3rd you know in their mind they know the game is all but over...with weekes not so much.

The devis have 6 wins right now and Brodeur has let up 5 goals in those 6 games. At least one or two of them would have gone the other way if weekes was in net and one or two of 6 wins is a lot. They won a game 1-0 and 2 games 2-1, you can bet weekes doesnt get the shutout in that 1-0 win and if he lost 1 of the two 1-0 wins this team is 4-5-2 instead of 6-3-2.

I tend to agree with you. Every year it seems people want to count out the Devils, and every year they end up challenging for the Atlantic Division. I won't believe the Devils are done until I see it.

That said, this is a huge blow and the biggest challenge NJ has had to overcome in about 15 years. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

They've had injuries to key offensive players early on this season, so I would hold off in judging their offensive output this season just yet. Rolston and Greene are of particular note.

They won't be challenging for the division this year...but I don't think they would have challenged for the division regardless. Rangers and Pens should be in that battle on paper all season, particularly if the Pens can get back their injured D while still being close.

They'll be alright. Weekes is a good goalie. And he's off to a good start, as he played great against Buffalo last night.

now I'll finally get to see if Brodeur was more a product of the devils system then his own abilities. Putting any competent goalie behind that defense for years and years, you'd probably see comparable numbers. Putting him on any other team he'd be mediocre at best.
