GAME PREIVEW
As Alex Ovechkin continues to heat up, so do the Washington Capitals.

The Southeast Division-leading Capitals look for a second straight victory when they continue a five-game road trip with their first visit to the Los Angeles Kings in almost three years.

With injuries still keeping leading scorer Alexander Semin (upper-body injury) and veteran Sergei Fedorov (ankle) off the ice, Ovechkin had a goal and three assists in Washington's 6-4 victory at Anaheim on Wednesday as the Capitals (11-4-3) improved to 1-0-1 on their first of two five-game trips this season. They have not lost in regulation since a 5-0 defeat at Buffalo on Nov. 1, going 6-0-2 in that stretch.

Ovechkin has two goals in his first 11 contests, and will now try to extend his scoring streak to six games. The reigning league MVP has six goals and eight assists during his five-game point streak.

"A guy like Alex Ovechkin probably rubs off on everybody in the league," Anaheim's Bobby Ryan said. "He brings out his best every game and brings out the best in everybody around him."

After posting two goals and one assist in a 6-5 shootout loss at New Jersey on Saturday to open the road swing, Ovechkin had plenty of help in beating Anaheim. Mike Green and Dave Steckel each had a goal and an assist, while Tomas Fleischmann added his seventh goal. Nicklas Backstrom also scored one game after notching a goal and four assists against the Devils.

The Capitals have scored at least one goal in 14 consecutive regulation periods.

"We just tried to play it simple, and that is the key for us," said Ovechkin, who has no goals and three assists in two career games versus Los Angeles. "We have a lot of skilled guys, and we just have to use our skills."

Jose Theodore made 28 saves against Anaheim to improve to 6-3-1, but Brent Johnson could earn the start in this contest with the games on consecutive nights.

Johnson, 5-1-2 with a 2.15 goals-against average, hasn't played since Nov. 12. He is 2-4-0 with a tie and a 2.71 lifetime GAA versus Los Angeles.

Washington has won its last two meetings with the Kings, including a 4-3 victory at home on Feb. 8, 2007 - the teams' most recent meeting. The Capitals beat Los Angeles 3-2 on Dec. 14, 2005, in their last visit to Staples Center.

After scoring 14 goals during a four-game winning streak, Los Angeles (7-8-2) has managed only one while dropping its last two contests.

The Kings were limited to 15 shots in the final two periods of a 2-0 loss at Anaheim on Sunday, marking the league-high fourth time they were shut out this season.

"If you don't score, you don't win," said Kings goaltender Erik Ersberg, who made 24 saves. "We gave it our best effort (against Anaheim). It was like this the last game, too. We couldn't get the puck in the net."

Los Angeles lost 3-1 to Nashville on Saturday, snapping its three-game winning streak at Staples Center. Michal Handzus has the Kings' lone goal over the last two games.

Anze Kopitar, the team's leading scorer with 13 points, has gone three games without a point but had a goal in the Kings' last meeting with Washington.

Ersberg, 4-3-1 with a 1.95 GAA, could start his eighth straight game ahead of previous No. 1 goalie Jason LaBarbera, who hasn't gotten the call since Nov. 1. Ersberg has never faced the Capitals.

This is going to be a tough one...

I predict the Kings will be up 3-2 with 5 minutes left to go in the game, then give up two quick goals and lose.

The Caps Mike Green probably won't play tonight. It's due to a shoulder injury he suffered in last nights game against the Ducks.

Semin has as many goals as the Kings top scorer has points.....I have seen a few Washington games this year....they are an offensive powerhouse.....I cannot see them scoring less than 4 goals in this game. I predict 5-2 Capitals.

Semin didn't play last night and the Ducks got beaten pretty badly. Score was not an indicator of how not close the game was.

Anyway, hopefully Semin doesn't play, which should give us a chance to keep it close. We'll lose this game. Unfortunately, LaBarbera will probably head back into the lineup after this beatdown.

I wouldn't be so pessimistic guys. Semin, Green and Fedorov will probably all be out of the lineup.

Coming from a Caps fan, I can't wait to see Doughty play. Averaging 25 minutes a game as an 18 year old is one thing, but looking good doing it puts him on another level.

6-1 Caps. The scoring woes continue.

Highlight of the night, John Zeiler gets into a scrap.

7-2 Caps.

Goals for the Kings come from Handzus and Stoll. Top line production continues to struggle.

Prepare to be thoroughly impressed. I keep pinching myself that he's doing the things he's doing at 18.

The Caps gave the Ducks fits last night. If there was ever a test for how strong our D is - tonight is the night.

Not likely. He was wearing a sling after taking a hit from Pronger last night.

Quote:
Mike Green was wearing a shoulder sling on his right arm after the game. But he said he's hopeful the injury is not too serious. When I asked him if it was sprained or separated, the defenseman said he won't know until the morning.

"It was a good hit," Green said of Chris Pronger's shoulder check that sent him hurtling into the end boards. "I seen him coming, but he's so big I couldn't brace myself. We'll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I'm just trying to keep it still right now. Obviously, it's not too bad, so we'll see how tonight goes."

The injury ruined a night Green had been looking forward to for some time. He grew up a big Scott Niedermayer fan and even asked for his stick after the game.

"I was excited to play to tonight," Green said. "As a young guy, I wanted to show him what I was all about. I was fortunate to get a little tast there on the power play in the first period."

"I got a stick from him," Green said. "It was awesome."

Also, Tarik says he believes Johnson will start tonight. At least Caps fans know the D will show up tonight. They usually do when Johnson plays. When Theodore does, however.. not so much.

Add another Caps fan to the list of us excited to see Doughty play. I'm not fond of these 10/10:30est gametime starts though.

3-1 kings. Yes low scoring affair. Brown and Frolov PP goals, with Kopi getting an empty netter. Ersberg is God. That will be all.

What's with the blowout predictions? The Caps aren't THAT good, even with a full lineup. If the Kings get the offense going, keep the pressure on and play very physical than we can win. Our guys need to be in Ovechkin's grill the second he touches the puck and hit him EVERY time. He'll get off his game trying to be physical in return.

If I'm not mistaken, Ovie is at his best when he's playing physical. Better to try and strip him of the puck and cut off passes to him. That would frustrate him the most imo. Ovie loves the physical stuff and thrives on a high level of intensity, he's not Kopitar.

I don't anticipate a blowout. I think our D surprises the caps, and if we grind it out in their zone with a tough, 'boring' game they will be pretty tired and suscetible come the 3rd period.

Expect Sully to be flying, hopefully not at the expense of defensive coverage and/or making good decisions.

I hope Doughty makes Ovie think twice about trying to jump around him. If DD gets that match-up it will be his best test of how smart a dman he really is.

Also, Ersberg clearly to me prefers high quality opponents. Everything in the way he plays tells me he loves the challenge of a player like Ovie, so I think/hope he will elavate his game to a higher level. Just watch Ersberg, he'll have a 'come and get it tough guy' body language whenever Ovie has the puck in our zone. 4-3 Kings in regulation!

GO KINGS GO
