Aside from that, not much going on. Kamil Kreps says he feels good, ready to return. PDeB says he's 'probable' for tomorrow. Everyone else was out there, including Gregory Campbell and Stephen Weiss.

Stillman remains out and Kreps could return. Stillman should likely not play on this trip.

Red Hot Cat Of The Night Bryan McCabe, who has 5 points in his last 4 games, including 2 goals last game and a shootout goal.

Primary Target

Kevin Weekes, the now default #1 goalie in New Jersey. After many injuries in the Garden State, none were as impactful as losing multiple-time Vezina winning goalie Martin Brodeur. Without their biggest weapon, can NJ survive the next few months in the hotly contested East? And does former Panther Weekes have what it takes to be their #1? Well, I doubt Clemmenson will have much to say about that.

Actually Horton got the only shootout goal for the cats. Hope to see a good game, because at least FSN graced us with an actual broadcast tonight.

Panthers need to win this one, therefore, I'll say 2-1 NJ OT

Should be a winnable game tonight, which probably means we'll loose. Weeks usually plays well against us...

Normally that theory holds...but in this case EVERY game is a must-win for the Panthers.

You realize the team must go 40-25 the rest of the season in order to have a good chance at the playoffs, right?

Yup and that's not happening barring a total miracle! Not with this team...

Hope this game is on center ice as the Tampa game was not!

I don't know that I agree with the predictions that say "we need to go XX-XX to make the playoffs". I look at it like this -- 19 points puts us in 8th, so we need to play win two more games than everyone else in front of us and behind the 7th spot. That's certainly doable.

If we were 4 points out with 10 to play, we'd think we stood a chance, so why can't we assume we can make it when were 4 points out with 65 to play?

That's not to say I'm happy with where were at, but we are still in the hunt.

The previous GDT is closed, but I wanted to respond to zeroG on this post regarding Bouw:

you are misunderstanding me. i'm not saying he's playing great, just that he's working hard. i've really never had a problem with jay in that regard and i think it's unfair and wrong to paint him as a quitter, which it seems some are. even you yourself suggest that he's having a poor season so far because he doesn't want to stay while at the same time agreeing with my point about this being the most important season for him. that just doesn't make sense.

i do agree that he isn't playing as well as he needs to (both in terms of offense and +/-), both for our sake and his but that happens sometimes. i really think he'll come around.

Ok, that's fair. I don't really have any argument against that, I do believe he's trying. But it really seems odd that just when he's supposed to play the best hockey of his life, he's taking a really long time to get going. Is it performance anxiety when everyone's looking? Is it immaturity due to inability to deal with contract distractions? Or is it just coincidence, and a bunch of bad luck? Can this be extrapolated to how he'd play under pressure in playoffs?

I don't claim to know. But it's certainly not helping his stock to play the way he's playing. And what I mean specifically, is that it's not helping his sanding with either a potential new team OR the current one.

I go by the theory that 96 points is needed to make the playoffs. And that's been pretty accurate each of the last two seasons.

DeBoer wasn't at all happy that Vokoun faced 50-some shots and put the team through a very rough practice according to GR. Said a lot of the guys were very sore after practice, lots of banging into the boards.

Glad to hear that.

We usually step up our game against the better teams, so I expect a good game tonight. Brodeur is out, so we need to take advantage.

This is one of those important games against a team who is between us and a top 8 spot (Jersey is currently 8th).

Despite being a Pens fan, I'll be there supporting you guys tonight...I'll probably be the only one that can pronounce the name on the back of my jersey (blue, Panthers - Bouwmeester) and a bright yellow ridiculous Panthers hat...good luck tonight!

We would?

4 points out with 4 to play means you have to hope the other team doesn't gain more than 2 points and meanwhile you need to at least win 3 to get in. All four if the team you're trailing gains just one more win. The odds are pretty bad.

The number can be refined later in the season, but it's a decent starting point that's been within 2 points of the playoff cutoff the last two seasons. It's not to say the Panthers can't manage a 40-25 record...it's just that they don't seem likely to do it at this point. Something's gotta change in their attitudes, efforts, and perhaps talent level for the team to have a shot at the playoffs. That's all. So far this season we're seeing more of the same things that have cost the team the final playoff berth come April.

If we want to look at the points right now...a win tonight puts us a point back of the eight spot. While we arent were we want to be record wise, its still early enough to get something done. With that being said, we probably lose tonight 10-2.

I dont know how Im going to be able to stay up and watch the game tonight...i am dead tired. Ill scrounge it though, because I have to watch my Canes take care of G-Tech too.

Yea, I completely understand where you're coming from and 96 points IS a good baseline. Keep in mind OTL points as well.

I guess I shouldn't have said 4 points in 4 games, but it just looked cool that way. Lets say 4 points in 10 games, I think we'd all think we have a real good shot at making it. Get what I'm trying to say?
