Wow... after taking all of last year to land an enforcer, JM is looking to ship him out a 1/4 of the way through this year. Brilliant.

JM the best GM in the league, where did I read that? Almost daily on these boards in the pre-season as he was building our "playoff team." Every single point those very few of us who blasted martin have come to fruition in alarming proportions. To waive Belak? I never thought he was the best enforcer but at least he was one. Now we go back to having enforcement by comiittee and watching Boynton and others get pounded by true heavyweights and watch our skill players who don´t score anyway get cheap shotted. Cohen and Martin have secured our spot as the laughingstock of the league and it keeps getting worse. At what point does martin become accountable and take some of the blame. I still haven´t heard him say he was wrong once, even as his list of failed free agent signings eat up useless salary, and Bouw´s value diminishes by the day with absolute noooooo chance of signing him long term. Amazing!!!!

DAMNIT, what the hell for????????????????????????????? Incredibly stupid!

He's not fought anyone since Boogaard, but damnit.

This better because we for some stinking reason need the cap space for an amazing trade. With Boogaard coming back. Damnit.

I would bet he goes unclaimed due to his two-year contract though it says a lot about JM, tuting his own horn about acquring an enforcer, giving him a two-year contract and now apparently having buyers regret by waiving him. How do those 6 year contracts you gave to Horton, Olesz and Weiss look to you now, Jacques?

GUYS. He barely played and when he wasn't a health scratch he would barely ever get over 2 min TOI. He's a liability in every zone and his only contribution is his checking and fighting ability. We can live with Boynton, Ballard, Horton, Olesz, McCabe and Bouwmeester as our physical players..

+ If he clears he can be the enforcer Rochester needs.

Wow, this team is last place and JM decides to waive our only enforcer? Yah Martin, you better believe that's going to shake things up.

I would say its a salary dump be he makes $650K. This franchise is ridiculous.

That "team toughness" approach worked so well in the past that we had to go out and get Belak. No team should be without an enforcer. This is incredibly stupid.

It's apparent by his lack of minutes the Belak isn't part of DeBoer's gameplan. Don't lay this all on Martin.

Now we need to hear the Jaybo offers...

Looks like the wrong player has been waived. I'd rather it been (one or all of) Pelts, Dvo, Zednik, or McLean.

We'll see what happens with this.

Ballard and Boynton are only players who I would consider physical of those names.

Stupid move.

I don't fully get this one, but could be that the Garrioch report had some truth to it and JM is looking to shed some salary. Belak hardly plays, he plays even less under DeBoer than he did under Martin, which I didn't expect. He might have been seen as dead weight and they're trying to clear a roster spot in order to bring in some scoring. Maybe they think Boynton can do the fighting, Toronto doesn't have a heavyweight and they don't get pushed around. It's all about how tough your team projects itself as, if you send a message that you're not going to take any crap, then you can get by without a heavy. That's what it seems DeBoer is trying to instill here. Most heavies aren't pests, and they only fight with eachother. If you have a guy like Boynton who can go with the Ruutu's and Janssens and Neil's, then you can get by. We might a trade for a pest or maybe Glass is brought up, he beat Avery and Neil last year. Who knows, we'll have to see how this plays out.

DeBoer always played a tough guy before, I think this has a lot to do with Belak not stirring things up and allowing Boynton to try that. In fact, let's just say a "little birdie told me." Though, I don't agree with just up and waiving him.

Boynton? I don't think the others are, either, but McCabe is a solid checker anyway.

Not really surprised by this. As an average at best fighter and a non-intimidator Belak didn't make the Leafs any tougher, and for a guy of his meagre abilities, he HAS to bring that to your roster.

Per GR --

Quote:
I left a message for general manager Jacques Martin, but he is refusing comment. The deal was confirmed through spokesman Justin Copertino.

Spoke with Wade and he's pretty upset about the whole deal. Says "they brought me down here to play,'' although, he's not playing.

Belak's minutes are way down, he only played six-plus minutes last night and didn't get in at all in the third period. He thinks this stems from him skipping optional skate Thursday in New Jersey (he thought he was playing that night instead of being a healthy scratch because of Kamil Kreps) and for not fighting and sticking up for Nick Boynton after he got beat up pretty good in his scrap with Milan Lucic.

''I tried to fight guys there and they refused to go,'' Belak said. “What do they want me to do, fight and take a penalty? We were trying to win that game. I'm not a rookie.''

Also: “They bring me down here to play, and I've seen my time dwindle from eight minutes to three shifts a game,'' Belak said. ''I'm not a liability. I'm tired of hearing how we need offense. Other tough guys play and are contributing. It's tough to fight from the bench.''

He seems pretty ticked off.

And, according to him, he has yet to hear from anyone within the organization regarding why they waived him.

"I wish they would have called me before they did this,'' he said.

Maybe they're refusing comment to him as well.

I would think if you're going to waive a player, a GM with some class would tell him why.
