Pens-Thrashers

Ok, so here's my big idea, that could work for both teams....

I think Staal is off the table, something tells me he signs an extension this year, so your big Penguin name on the block this year is.....KRIS LETANG

Pit sends-

Letang
Sabourin
Minard
Filewich
1st pick in 09

Atlanta sends-

Kovalchuk
Exelby
Pavelec

With Lehtonen on the IR, and more than likely either done in ATL, or traded, the Thrashers get a hot young goaltender in Sabourin. They also get a puck moving defenseman in Letang, two solid prospects in minard and filewich, and another 1st round pick from the pens.

The penguins get Kovalchuk, and this time make no mistake, they offer him the money, every penny of it. If you get this guy, you don't let him walk. Then I think you move Eaton with a pick to some team thin at defense (tampa, isles, blues, etc) and you replace him with a much much better exelby. Pavelec becomes your 2nd goalie, or possibly your 3rd if you have faith in young John Curry, or go sign a veteran (Thibault).

The end result for the Penguins could be something along these lines....

Kovalchuk-Crosby-Satan

Talbot-Malkin-Sykora

Kennedy-Staal-Cooke

Godard-Zigomanis-Dupuis

Gonchar-Exelby

Orpik-Whitney

Scuderi-Gill

As far as the Thrasher's lines.....does it even matter? Like they would contend with what they have. Give them another 3 or so years to develop and rebuild....in another city

Kovalchuck still has 2 years on his contract.

That's a brutal proposal, and I doubt even Waddell takes that.

You do realize Minard and Filewich are career ahlers right? Please lock this NOW. This is the worst proposal in history.

Minard & Filewich (like people have mentioned already) are not really what you would want unless you are just trying to stock your AHL team, which GM's do in the off season and through waiver pick-ups.

It basically boils down to Letang + 1st for Kovalchuk and that just isn't enough to land a guy like Kovalchuk, it might be a start for a larger package but not enough. Between Letang & Goligoski, I think Goligoski is the one likely to go between the two (gotta be real here).

Pavelec wants to be a #1 (or does he just WANT to be in the NHL in general?). I wouldn't mind trading for Pavelec just for the fact that in a year or two he becomes a pretty good trade asset if he continues to get better and could result in decent return for the team.

This trade is brutal for the Thrashers, absolutely brutal. They get a back-up, 2 AHL'ers, a future top 4 (permanent, probably a year away if not now) and a 1st rounder that won't be that high. Pens walk away with this as a win of a deal but it's just soo lop sided in favour for the Pens.

I see that's your 2nd post too...brutal.

Kovalchuk has another year after this one. Unless you counted this year as well.

1. Atlanta gets totally ripped off in that trade
2. that trade puts the Pens over the cap
3. Filewich and Minard are not solid prospects
4. Pens aren't trading Letang or their 1st this year. Letang makes less than 1 million next year.
5. the cap figures don't work with the Pens cap situation in summer 2009 either- it'd force the Pens to shed some more salary in the form of one of Whitney, Goligoski or Staal in the summer to stay under the cap and ice a complete team.

KL is going to still be on his 1st contract next year. There is a good chance Goligoski will get a fat raise though. That's why he and Whitney are more likely trade bait. Also Letang plays better in his own end and has higher upside than Gogo.

Why in the hell would Atlanta take this trade. Letang would hardly upgrade the D considering you have Bogosian, Enstrom, Schnieder and Havelid already. Letang would be maybe a 4th dman there. Pavelic is the future, Lehtonen is a RFA at the end of the year and I don't think he will be back. Sanbourin is a back up at best in the NHL. There is a reason he spent time behind Ty Conklin last year. Minard c'mon how much longer is it gonna take him to break into the league.

I have no doubt Kovi will be moved, but I don't think its gonna be in a package like this. I suspect you will see him going out west to a team with cap room and a decent package of players in return. Maybe LA for Sully and one of their young defensemen.

Pens 1st in 09 will likely be late, Filewich is trash, Sabu is trash, the Pens have zero need for Pavelec, the Pens have zero need for another NHL defenseman, the Thrashers can get more for Kovalchuk than Letang and a collection of Pens junk. Poorly thought out proposal.

Kovalchuk would be incredible with Malkin but how could you justify putting Crosby on the second line, lol.

As for the original proposal -- WOW!

Obviously this is a absurdly bad trade, no need to really get into that part.

Regarding this last part here:

1. Only 1 of these teams has been close to being sold and relocated.

2. During one of the few bad seasons the Penguins have had in the last 25 years, they had a lower yearly attendance that the Thrashers have ever had in 8 years in Atlanta.

Atlanta Population: 519,145 (metro of 5,278,904)
Pittsburgh Population: 312,819 (metro of 2,462,571)

99% of statistics can say anything you want 50% of the time. 75% of people know that.

But anyways... the op trade stinks.

Have to love how he knocks the Thrashers in his first post like that.

Oh dear God.

I wish I could virtually spit at this awful excuse for a trade proposal.

The problem with this proposal, and a lot of others, besides from not being thought out or informed at all, is saying "Player A is off the table."

Well, you can't take "Player A" off the table if you're trying to get a top flight star.

We can't/won't trade Malkin, Crosby, Fleury, Staal, etc.

Well, if you're not willing to trade one of these guys, you're never going to get a Kovalchuk or player of that caliber. You've got to be willing to give in order to get.

This is Don Waddell you're talking about.

As for the OP, who I'm going to go out on a limb and say is 14 - this is the worst proposal I've EVER seen. Worse than mattystajan, worse than jeffleafsfan91, worse than that guy from Ottawa who pretended to be in tight with Ray Emery... just absolutely horrible. You're asking Atlanta to pretty much gut their franchise for spare parts.

Let's start with the goalies. Sabourin is 28, Pavelec is 21, and Pavelec is already a better goaltender than Sabourin. NO WAY IN HELL do they trade Pavelec with Lehtonen on IR. If anything, they wait for Lehtonen to come back and then flip Kari.

Then you also have Filewich and Minard, a pair of forwards who have yet to even establish themselves in the NHL - Filewich has yet to even record an NHL point and Minard only has two at 27 years old. Neither looks like serious NHL material and would be useless to the Thrashers.

Now you have the Thrashers giving up Exelby. Why? You guys have plenty of defensemen, and I believe Orpik plays pretty much the same style as Exelby. X has also played rather well for the Thrashers, and this trade is no motivation for them to move him.

So that leaves Letang and a 1st for Kovalchuk... which is a good start for Shero.

Did you spend even 5 seconds thinking about what Atlanta wants? Seriously. We have zero interest in another backup goalie like Sanford.
