Trade Deadline - History

Post Lockout has there been a trade during the season prior to the deadline that has ever moved a TOP 10 D-man (in the NHL)?

I ask this, because I believe that a top 10 d-man is more valuable than a Top 10 forward.

Also, I believe that Jay-Bo is amongst Top 10 d-men in the NHL and I believe the return on him could be larger than Hossa last year.

Thoughts?

JBo isnt a top 10 D man.

Lindstrom, Chara, Phaneuf, Pronger, Neidermeyer, Zubov, Gonchar, Markov, Rafalski, Timonen

15 maybe.

But he will still get a large return.

He isn't a top 10 defenceman. Sorry, top 25 sure, top 10 not even close.

Because of the premium of guys like Bouwmeester, if he is moved, it will probably be the largest package we've seen for anyone since the lockout. The deadline is going to be wild with rumors with the types of guys who will be on the block.

Markov

Are 10 defenceman I would take without a second thought over JBouw.

EDIT - Here are players that I would say are at the same level..

Timonen, Gonchar, Zubov, Whitney, Niedemeyer, Ballard, Souray, Keith, Blake,

Burns if he played D all the time gets a top 10 nod.

That is a matter of opinion. Personally, I'd take him over about half those guys.

People have some inveresting ideas of top 10 defencemen, but like the poster above me said it's really a matter of opinion.

I'd probably put Jay-Bo in my top15, maybe 10 not quite sure.

Getting back to topic, Brian Campbell is probably the closest thing you'll find post-lockout. The Pronger trade was obviously a different animal as it was during the offseason and he was signed for several more years.

Otherwise, we've seen a handful of solid but non-superstar defensemen at the deadline:

Brendan Witt, Willie Mitchell, Brad Stuart (twice), Craig Rivet, Mattias Norstrom, Adam Foote

While I like J-Bo and acknowledge that 25+ minute defensemen are a rare commodity, I think a guy like Hossa had a better resume and a little more value. But I guess we'll find out (and it's completely dependent on whether Jacques Martin wants immediate returns or picks/prospects).

Here's some handy links for post deadline transactions:

No way Bou is at the same level as zubov and Gonchar...no way..

When JayBo matures and improves in time maybe..but not currently

Just about every post on here starts out as a decent top 10 group, then there are 1,2, sometimes 3 players thrown in for absolutely no good reason.

the thing is Bouwmeester is 24, so his value in a trade is higher than Zubov or Gonchar and some of the older guys, not because he's a better player but he's a stud #1 with plenty of years left.
