OT: Strathmore, AB

Hey everyone,

A career move is being made across the country. My line of work has me moving from Nova Scotia all the way out west to Strathmore, AB just outside of Calgary. As this is highly unfamiliar territory for me, I'd like to know what some people here who are familiar with this area can say about it.

It seems to be pretty close to Calgary and I know Calgary is a beautiful city, so hopefully that bodes well.

Thanks guys!

It's about 40 minutes out if I am thinking/remembering the right place. It's pretty small, has the usuals(Tim's, McDonalds, Subway etc...) mostly small houses and trailers from what I remember and have seen.

I haven't been there in so long so take it with a grain of salt.

Strathmore is about 1/2 hour out on the main route from Calgary (16th Ave, just follow the main road all the way in).

It has all ther basic amenities, the important ones (TIMMY'S!!), and a gorgeous lake all of 15 minutes away in Chestermere.

I lived there from 1995 to 2002, I loved that town. They did not have a timmies or walmart etc. it has grown up a lot. When I first moved there it had ~5000 people, and now it has over 10000. It has the feel of a small town for sure, the downtown is a typical quiet small town downtown. There are a couple of lakes and nice places to go for a quiet jog. The people are generally friendly, crime was never a problem... it was the type of town where the residents did not bother to lock their doors. It has a newish and very good high school if you have kids. It has a hospital and a clinic, I never had better healthcare access anywhere else. I am glad to have lived there.

...and it is a 24 minute drive from Calgary.

The Station is a pretty fun little pub. My fiance's parents live out there on the golf course and we spend quite a bit of time out there. They have all the ammenities that you could want with Walmart, fast food, BP's, movie stores, pretty much anything you need you can get there. Like other people have said its a 25 minute drive to the edge of Calgary so it's not like you are stuck in a small town (albeit its not so small anymore).

That sounds like great news. I am most definitely looking forward to the move there. Everyone I've talked to said I defintely lucked out with where I'm being sent opposed to other places in Alberta I could have been shipped.

What places would those be?

(I'm curious, that's all.)

I also lived in Brooks, which is the closest 'city' to Bassano... and Brooks is probably the worst place to live in Southern Alberta. I hate that town (city) with a passion.

Bassano is like an hour and a half away from Calgary. Its smaller and dingier than what Strathmore is. You should buy a lottery ticket you already one once.

Redcliff isn't that great, it's extremely close to Medicine Hat something like 5-15 minutes away, only been to RC once, my grandpa wanted to show me where he grew up.

Strathmore is definitely a nice place, fairly close to Calgary, and like others have said they have stuff like walmart, BP, etc.

I had to head out to Strathmore last night and today. Wow it has grown since I was a kid. Not a abd town but the down side is a rather large feedlot south of town. Besides that, not a bad town.

True enough sir. If the wind is blowing in the wrong direction the whole entire town smells like a giant turd
