OT: "Citi Field" naming rights controversy

I think they should absolutely, 100% rip that sign off of the new park. Citigroup represents everything that is bad, and nothing that is good about this great city.

Call it something else...I detest corporations' names on buildings...especially these companies that are simply bad at capitalism, and only for a free market system when they are taking from people.

What's your take?

How about Bailout Field? Corporate Welfare Park? Collectivist Coliseum? Treasury Stadium?

I agree that it's pathetic that they're naming it after Citi Bank, but "Citi Taxpayers' Field" is possibly the most pathetic thing I've ever heard.

on a more serious note

How about Jackie Robinson Stadium. Unless it's that name, I will call it new Shea for the rest of my life.

God no...

They need to stop jamming him down our throats. I get it, he broke the color barrier...ok...great.

every year wayyyy too much hoopla. It's become a gimmick.

plus he was never a met. Tom Seaver Stadium would make more sense.

Not a Mets' fan , but Payson Park, after Joan Payson (not sure of the spelling) is the most appropriate name.

Tough call.

Does the government have the authority to say how Citi promotes itself? If you're going to strip the name off the stadium, do you also have to stop them from taking ads out in newspapers?

Sponsorship makes these projects economically viable. Without them, you may not have the backing to build a stadium. What's the effect on the local economy if you remove a huge part of the funding for the project? If it then puts the burden on the city to take up the balance of the costs, then the taxpayers are paying for it anyway.

Because there are thousands of great african american atheletes in all of professional sports and while I think it's awesome that he is a true and legit pioneer, and I applaud MLB that they honored him, but pimping his name year in and year out gets tiresome. And it's not a B/W thing, it's a "Stop using the mans name for additional Revenue" thing and move on.

It may be an odd view, but it's my opinion and I don't care if someone shares in it or not, but the longer we keep harping on B & W issues, the more it becomes more about the B and the W and not about the human beings invloved.

Jackie Robinson is a great HUMAN BEING first and foremost, he's a great baseball player 2nd and the fact that he's the first African American player, to me, is so secondary, but that seems to be the driving influence behind MLB's pimpage.

I am getting tired of that as much as I am tired of the Rangers pimping out that Messier won the Rangers a cup, but without 2 other players playing the roles they played, we don't win that cup.

It gets old and there are other great HUMAN BEINGS that can be celebrated for their accomplishments.

Again, it's my opinion, most won't share it, that's fine.

Your whole argument just seems one sided. Maybe they are pimping him to a certain degree, but dont you think there is also a flip side to that coin?

He's a baseball icon, and not even just baseball, he's an American icon who should be celebrated one lousy day a year. A day you think is too much. One day.
