Unless I am wrong, the Caps may choose to keep Alzner in Washington using the salary cap space and leave Clark on LTIR until which time they have more cap space.
That's got to be a good feeling, Captain bumped for a guy who just played his first NHL game.

Looks like Alzner's being given #27 tonight (from "Welcome to the Show):

I like how they apparently classify him in the same realm as Ovechkin & Backstrom. Shows some confidence from management that this team desperately needs right now.

Thx for that link as I always wondered the Caps policies when it comes to assigning numbers.

He is in the same class as Ovechkin and Backstrom. Top 5 picks. I don't know if a number makes much of a difference when you're in the NHL.

makes sense with Flash switching.

I kinda like having new guys have to play in high numbers till they earn it.

So, recent draftees to get a low number almost immediately upon making the big club:

Ovechkin
Backstrom
Alzner
Fehr

which one of these doesn't belong here? Which one is not like the others?

I do like the fact that Nate Ewell stepped in and helped Alzner get his number because Alzner was too unassuming to do it himself.

That's Nate Ewell's blog not Vogel's.

Strung, to a question you asked at the end of the other News and Notes thread - Carlson would not be eligible to be recalled from London/OHL unless P. McNeill, Godfrey, Dovgan, Pokulok, and Collins were all unavailable for recall.

Not surprised to see Helmer signed and recalled in this situation.

Didn't Fehr wear #50 in 05-06?

How does Fehr not belong?

Middle of the first round, high pedigree in juniors, he was seen as a stud who might step right in when he first showed up many years ago to one of the first Rookie Camps.

Yes, it certainly has changed, but he was highly touted.

Top 5 pick? No, he wasn't. But he had high expectations (and probably somewhere in the organization someone still has some)

I'm not suggesting that he isn't - I'm simply saying it's good to see.

Yes.

About numbers, fwiw, I am not a fan of the Caps org's approach to numbers, but I like more traditional numbers and for players to wear the same jersey number for their tenure with the org, if it is available.

Had he earned 14 when it was given to him?

That was my point.

from what I saw, it's the Bruins who stepped up in the 3rd, and the Isles had absolutely no answer for it.

Are we going to go another 4 months with no captain? I have no memories of captaincy's gone back to look at precedents, but maybe Clark or Bruce will give Ovi the captaincy that he has earned. I like having a captain on the ice in all games. If for no other reason, it makes the eventual passing of torches a non-issue. And you can see how a guy fairs as captain before naming him a C until his career ends.

random OT, but it is about the Caps, well about Boudreau:

"The other night after Clutterbuck’s two-goal game, the Washington Post writer asked Caps coach Bruce Boudreau if he had ever even heard of Cal Clutterbuck. Boudreau said no, but Cal’s brother used to attend his hockey school.

I went to Clutterbuck to ask about that, and Clutterbuck smiled and said, “I don’t have a brother. It was me.” The first hockey school Clutterbuck ever attended was Boudreau’s Golden Horseshoe Hockey School in St. Catharines, Ont. He was five, six and seven."

It used to be that way, in the Poile era....
