With these injuries, it's amazing the Caps have a five-point edge in the division, albeit less so when taking a cursory look at the division this year.

The Caps are building a cushion in the division even with the injuries. They are falling behind in their efforts to be a 1 or 2 seed in the playoffs, though.

I think the Caps are in a somewhat novel situation in that even if they play a lot better, they can't get a better seed. Considering how good Pittsburgh is even without Gonchar and Whitney, and the hefty point lead Boston and Pittsburgh already have, it seems unlikely that the capitals will catch them in the standings. Boston is a slim possibility, but Pittsburgh is out of reach.

JP isn't reporting anything.

If you learned anything from last season don't count this team out of anything.

Nothing is out of reach. If there's anything I learned about hockey from following the Caps last season, it is just that.

reading comprehension is a wonderful thing

I have no idea if someone can't play tomorrow night or is a game time decision, but yes, I heard there is a Hershey Bears d-man, Sean Collins, joining the team in Toronto (also, I have no idea when or if a formal recall will be announced depending on if they expect him to play, but I assume it won't be made official until Saturday)

IIRC, Sloan got hit with a puck in his leg last game and looked like it was bothering him at times during the game???

(and I did some simplistic calculations, if Semin isn't expected to play Sat or Sun, they can put him on LTIR for cap purposes and he would be eligible to play any game starting with Boston on Wed.; and they would need to put someone else on IR to free up an active roster spot, but again, not an issue given how long Fedorov and Erskine have been out; they'd be eligible to play as soon as the next game)

How is Boston a possibility yet Pittsburgh out of reach when Boston (and NY) are both 4 pts. up on Pittsburgh?

Also, the notion that with 57 games left that a 3-10 pt margin is out of reach is a bit goofy.

There's A LOT of hockey to be played and the top 8 will change drastically.

You can retroactively put someone on LTIR?

yes, that is my understanding for the purposes of calculating the 10 games and 24 days; retroactive to the day after the last game (well actually it says something like this - measured from later of day player is unfit to play or player's last game played); and after you asked, I looked quickly at 50.1d vi in the CBA and it looks like that is correct (It's too late at night to be reading that silly document)

and it is official, Sean Collins called up link

I guess my post was too late at night and buried, I thought a few people would react to that news last night after I posted it

edit: and Corey M chimes in with the same Tyler Sloan speculation link

I'm not sure if there is an official measure of absurdity on the injuries, but it feels like we've hit it.

the possible D tonight:

Morrisonn, 26yo (as of later in Dec), 298NHL GP plus 7 PO games
Jurcina, 25yo, 222GP plus 7PO
Helmer, 36yo, 138GP plus 6PO
Lepisto, 24yo, 12GP
Alzner, 20yo, 5GP (1st year pro)
Collins, 25yo, 0GP (2nd year pro)

(Sloan, 27yo, 18GP)

And on the injuries, I think this is correct:

Poti (groin) last game played 11/26/08
Erskine (concussion) last game played 11/24/08
Fedorov (ankle) last game played 11/22/08
Green (shoulder), on IR, last game played 11/19/08
Semin (upper torso?), on IR, last game played 11/14/08; if put on LTIR, 10 games/24 days, 12/10/08 Boston game is the earliest he could return

LTIR: Clark, Pothier, Schultz
IR: Green, Semin (likely on LTIR), (plus one of Fedorov or Erskine)

Roster (but one of Fedorov or Erskine are likely on IR):
2G: Johnson and Theodore
9D: Alzner, Collins, Erskine, Helmer, Jurcina, Lepisto, Morrisonn, Poti, Sloan
13F: Aucoin, Backstrom, Bradley, Brashear, Fedorov, Fehr, Fleischmann, Gordon, Kozlov, Laich, Nylander, Ovechkin, Steckel

That's certainly what he did against NYI.

For the most part yes. Though others certainly chipped in.

A hattrick would be nice.

This brings absurd to a whole new level.

Next 5:

Leafs
Canes
Bruins
Sens
Canadians

That's not too bad. The Bruins are hot and the Canadians are good, but the other three are beatable. I wouldn't be surprised to see this lineup get 6 points out of that stretch.

Considering schedule, team depth, division and timing, the Caps are almost uniquely situated to deal with these injuries, which would probably destroy some other franchises' playoff hopes.

I suppose if there is a bright side to Semin's injury is that the LITR designation does free up some temporary cap room to extend Alzner's stay in DC.

EDIT: I just realized it only gets us down to the Cap limit. Nevermind. Carry on.
