Your not going to get better then a late 1st rounder or something Hamilton doesn't already have.

You could get PPG player at a cheaper price. Why bother?

Why would we want a late first rounder for Kovy??? We are trying to win now! You want perpetual re-build? We need defensemen not first rounders. We have already too many young players/prospects...why would we want more???? Why would we trade a forward for another forward??? We need a top 4 D man badly. Or we will move for a player like Kovalchuk. Otherwise, we won't move. Kovy (our Kovy) is here to stay and he will probably sign back here at a discount price next summer.

Value-wise, we won't get his real value so we better keep him. You don't shed players like Kovalev for no reason. You get rid of Dandenault, Begin, Kostopoulos etc.... not Kovalev. Unless you are in a rebuild mode.

the team hasn't played more than a couple good games since the beginning of the season. We will get back on track eventually

Sure. But other teams may think otherwise.

Personally, I wouldn't re-sign Kovalev anyway, so I'd be quite tempted to trade him for a first rounder, then package it away for a bigger need. Like a top defenceman.

Kovalev will not land you a great player right now....He's playing like he was 2 years ago, he's been inconsistent all his career and he's a pending UFA... You could get a pick or a defenseman, maybe a 4th D-man.

For Kovalev you could probably get...
Fernandez, Ryder, and a 2nd?

That is not bad.

We could then trade Fernandez, Ryder, Lang, Dandenault and a 2nd to the Leafs for Kubina, Antropov and a 1st

No they couldn't. Bruins and Habs aren't trading, especially when the Bruins are playing this well

So what happened to Kovalev anyway? Did he get in a car accident or something? Or is he having one of his up and down seasons?

Still Fernandez, Ryder, 2nd <<< Kovalev

No way I'd consider it, unless you take Penner out.

There is no way Dallas will deal Neal! Plus that would put Dallas way way over the cap!

If the Habs are in 15th place in the Conference in February and effectively mathematically eliminated from the playoff race, I still think Gainey just quietly rides out the season in ignominy (probably with a bag over his head) rather than firesaling any free agents like Kovalev for prospects. Prospects aren't in short supply for the Habs, but Kovalev has been a top-notch player for them, and the Habs will want to try to retain him.

habs aren't dealing kovalev who had a monster year last year and is still on pace for around 70-80 points (even though he's been inconsistent again)... unless they get an equal value scoring vet in return. for instance if habs sign sundin he might become available.

otherwise no. of course if habs fall out of playoff race, which seems very unlikely, he will most definitely be dealt

nope. His value in the playoffs on the odd chance he regains form is worth much more to the habs than anything he would return.
