The Columbus Blue Jackets are believed to be interested in taking D Randy Jones' $2.75 million salary off the Flyers' hands. Jones has missed the entire season due to hip surgery but is scheduled to come off the long-term injury list next week, possibly as soon as Tuesday night when the Islanders visit the Flyers. The Flyers are not desperate to make a deal right now because C Danny Briere was placed on long-term injury with a groin tear that will keep him out another four to five weeks, giving them the cap space for Jones' return."
I would take Leclaire for Jones and some future picks. I know he is injury prone, but I would take him.

Well I mean of course, we have to send them one of the #2 or #3 goalies we have. I mean we don't have a #1 to send them, but they could use Biron or Nitty as a backup where both of them belong. Mason is playing well for them. Besides Hitchcock always liked Nitty.

I don't believe for a second Holmgren would send his starting goalie, who a few months ago got them to the conference finals, to be a back-up in Columbus, Ohio.

Holmgrem did sign Lupul to an extension that pays him $4.25 million a year.

So yeah, anything can happen.
Yes, it can. But this is just silly. People are still fuming from last night.
The article is about Jones, and somehow we have people swapping Biron and Leclaire? How in the sweet holy hell is that going to help us or even have a remote possibility of happening?

That is absolutely ridiculous. Those future picks better be damned good.

I think the Flyers should be looking for a goalie of the future more so then just looking so a slight upgrade over Biron.
Not that we could get LeClaire, but if we did, is he really THE SOLUTION for the goalie problems we have had for I don't even know how long?
I say we get some decent f'ing goalie prospects for once.
Am I the only one (JXC doesn't count) that would be disapointed to see Jones moved?
And for those of you that think his return is high right now, you're nuts. His value has never been lower. Just signed a nice contract and is coming off hip surgery. Jones isn't going anywhere for the forseeable future.

We may need Jones. Alberts will return to being Alberts (he's playing above his head right now and still manages to make some really dumb mistakes), Vaananen hasn't looked the same since coming back from injury and will get injured again, Sbisa looks 18 more and more, Carle is still unpredictable and now has back problems, Kukkonen isn't in the long-term plans and shouldn't be, Coburn hasn't been himself this year...
Not a good time to be trading defensive depth, even if it is very tempting to ditch Jonesy's contract.

I don't think we 'may' need him, I think we 'do' need him.
I thought Randy Jones was a very good player for this team last season, and I've defended him often on these boards. I never wanted to see him go, but...now that Carle is here I must admit it changes things a bit. Carle, to me, is essentially filling the role that they wanted Jones to begin fulfilling.
Maybe they intend to pair Jones with Carle, but I'm not entirely sure I like that idea, because...
A) I'm one who is generally in favor of more balanced pairings...neither of them are exactly more defensive d-men, and I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with a 2nd pairing of that type
B) whose to say how long we'd even need that pairing with Parent around...personally, I think there's a good chance he could be ready for 2nd pairing duties paired with a player like Carle as soon as later this season
And if Jones is not with Carle...where is he, the third pair I suppose? The problem with that is that it is a little tough to be paying a 3rd pairing defender 2.75m. If you've noticed, our 3rd pairing hasn't been getting a lot of minutes most of this season. But then again, maybe Jones' presence on the 3rd pairing could allow us to take some pressure off our top guys, and we wouldn't have to give the top guys so many minutes.
The other part of that, though, is that if they did put Jones on the 3rd pairing, it would also mean to me that Sbisa goes back to juniors. They'd probably send Sbisa back and go with Jones-Alberts. And I don't want that. Sbisa's doing well enough...and I think the third pairing is a good place for him.
To summarize, with Carle here now, and with Sbisa's presence factoring in some as well...I'm not entirely sure how Randy Jones fits in. He certainly is a good player though...he's worth his contract, and I'll be excited to see him back soon and see how he does wind up fitting in. He may very well fit in great...maybe he plays great with Carle, and the third pair becomes Sbisa-Vaananen. Maybe when Parent comes back, he plays with Jones on the third pair, Sbisa goes back to juniors...and we have three very strong and balanced pairings, and it's all fine and dandy. It all remains to be seen. Who knows? We shall see.
i'd love to toss jones off ship. i'd be right there to cut anchor in this situation.
i don't absolutely despise the guy but if we can get rid of his contract, awesome. i do agree about his value being at a low right now though, and how it doesn't necessarily make sense to trade him because of the depth issues. what would Columbus even send back in return?
and for god's sake, mods, please please please don't let this turn into a goalie thread. let alone one for pascal leclaire.

agreed.
If the Flyers were to move Jones, it would be a salary dumping issue. He could be part of a big trade down the line, or a trade for a midlevel draft pick right now to a team like columbus.
