To get to Beltre, who hadn't had a hit or looked decent during the game against Lee. Instead, after Youk's double, they walked Beltre to get to Drew. Both Youk and Beltre are right handed, so that's not an issue, but Beltre had looked lost against Lee the rest of the game.

That was just one of several odd managerial decisions made by Washington and Co. last night. Add in an already odd one today, and you've got a manager who's winging it even after he's allegedly got enough experience to know what he's doing. If he was just unconventional, I could buy that, but he's not even logical enough to be unconventional.

You don't intentionally put the winning run on base if the only advantage you are gaining is as subjective as "looked lost" as opposed to a real platoon advantage. Even then I still don't think you should do that. Beltre is a very good player. How many times facing Lee would he have continued to "look lost"?

Red Sox fans have got to be the whiniest bunch of entitled douchers in the history of the sport. They've booed the play-at-the-plate call for 9 subsequent pitches after, even though the call was correct and even the NESN announcers admitted as much.

Actually you could and should have because streaks matter, and Youk has been hitting far better than Beltre of late, not to mention the season. You go with matchups, and Youk had fared better against Lee than Beltre had.

Heck, I thought Washington should have pulled Lee and put in a right hander to finish things off (Feliz pitched an inning the night before, so maybe O'Day or FX2).

They've got tough competition with Yankee and Phillies fans.

All of this is wrong.

You go with matchups? Over putting the winning run on base? No. You do not put the winning run on base. Maybe if the next batter was Kevin Cash...

...but it was Adrian Beltre. Who's having a top-10 in the AL offensive season. Youkilis has been better, but not far better, not enough to play the "matchups", which the existence of a favorable one is questionable in the first place.

You don't pull a player like Lee in the 9th when they're pitching that well. Every additional arm you bring in increases the variance that someone will just not have their best stuff.

No mistake was made. Youkilis simply executed. You tip your hat and move on.

Exhibit A: Feliz comes into the game, appears to be throwing well, yet immediately gives up a HR to an inferior player than Beltre. That would've been game-over under your decisions.

You always, always, always play matchups and percentages, especially with the game on the line.

In this case, you walk a guy who has hit Lee successfully once during the game and had two other good ABs and hits over .370 against LHP so you can face a guy who has looked foolish against Lee during the game and hits .330 against LHP. It's the percentages. That or you put in a right handed pitcher for one batter because it's more important to win the game and pull a pitcher like Lee who pitched a gem thus far.

The Rangers were one out away from the win, with the tying run in scoring position and the winning at home plate. It wouldn't have meant much if you put the winning run on first base to get a more favorable matchup because they only had to make one out.

I strongly, strongly disagree. That's just now how you play baseball. You DO NOT put the winning run on base willingly.

That's not playing matchups or percentages, it's micro-managing. You're trying to gain some negligible advantage while simultaneously introducing a huge variable. Beltre is OPSing over 1000 against lefties for chrissakes! The drop off is not big enough for this to make any sense.

If you don't trust Cliff Lee in that situation, you'll never trust any starter, ever. Lee is perhaps the Rangers' best pitcher ever at the top of his game and he was rolling along on a great pitch count a single out away from a complete game. Pulling him there for a reliever is insanity. You might as well not have even traded for him.

It would have been a left/right matchup. Youk is hitting ~.270 against righties. The matchups did not favor the Rangers, and Washington fed right into them as he normally does.

There were no fewer than 4 incredibly sexy defensive plays by Elvis and Ian tonight.

Huge Rangers fan here. I came up with a concept to "fix" our home jerseys. I don't have a problem with "TEXAS" on the front of them personally, but a lot of people do. So I came up with this solution. Keep "TEXAS" on the grey and blue jerseys since we wear those away mostly. And then do this:

The second one is unfinished, but just picture it with the new font and lettering and a red cap.

Absoutely spot on dude. That's exactly what they should do. The cursive Rangers script is a great look and shouldn't be relegated to windbreakers and jackets on the bench. You're also right that the greys and blues should be left alone. I wouldn't want to lose the Texas flag patch on any of the sleeves though, not sure if you left that off intentionally or not.

Yeah, I did these in Illustrator, and you can't cut and paste pictures the same way as in photoshop, I'll update that now actually.

Perfect.

You have a vector file of the Rangers script? And the nameplate font?

No, I just used pictures from ****************. And there isn't a font available anywhere, but from what I can tell it's just the standard MLB Block font with custom extrusions for each letter/number. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to making it.

Ah, OK. Just thought I'd check since I can't find it anywhere either.

What are your thoughts on the red hat vs. blue hat with the white homes? The red looks totally unique, though slightly mismatched. The blue ends up being pretty reminiscent of the Dodgers/Cubs.

I don't think it's mismatched at all. I love how it makes the red in the logo and letters/numbers pop. Especially with the red undershirts. That being said, I don't mind the blue combo at all. Personally, and obviously biased, I think we've got the best uniform combinations in the league. A lot of people complain about not having a primary color (generally not Rangers fans) and I don't get it. What colors do you think of when you hear Texas? Red, White, and Blue. We don't need to scrap one or the other. We've got a perfect set as far as I'm concerned.

8 innings, no walks. Go BGL.

I kept waiting for something bad to happen. It didn't.

Once again, I agree 100%. So many sports teams are obsessed about being either "blue" or "red", with perhaps one functioning only as an accent to the other. Why can't they be equal and in balance?
