What about Kovalchuk. The guy that everyone wants. He couldn't even (or was too lazy to) keep up with Callahan on the Rangers second goal.

He scores overtime goals.

There are problems with this team, but Gomez is not one of them.

Uh, yeah he is. He is not playing his best hockey, not even close. He is certainly part of the problem.

I think he's been sloppy in all zones and he's turning the puck over way too much. I also don't think he's creating space or making plays for whoever are on his wings, and he's had plenty of quality time with good wingers, and he's had plenty of time on the PP (I don't see him setting up guys for easy shots).

I'm glad he got a goal last night and got into the game (although was not impressed with his overall play), and hopefully that's a springboard into Jersey. But honestly, Gomez is not "The Man"; he's best as a second line support player, which is what he was last season and he thrived when the microscope was on Jagr and not on him.

Bottom line - he needs to play better. If Dubi didn't begin the season the way he did, the Rangers wold be in real trouble because the pressure on Gomez would be magnified and I don't think he can handle it. So I'm glad they are where they are, but Gomez needs to now prove me wrong and show me he can be "The Man" and start to carry this team.
This.

If you're going to include every player who is not "playing their best hockey," then the entire team from top to bottom is 'the problem.'

From Sather down to the equipment manager.

Sorry guys but one softie against the 2nd worst team in the league doesn't get him in my good graces. The fact that Atlanta is probably the worst defensive team in the league with thier back up goalie in and we had to go to OT to beat them scares the hell out of me. Good thing is NJ is up next and they seem to bring the best out of these Rangers.

But to single out gomez as if hes even CLOSE to "whats wrong with this team" is simply ridiculous, and clearly you have something against him if you think from this whole team that gomez is the problem

That's what I'd argue, yes.

you win when your best players are your best players, isnt that the old adage? With Gomez, Drury, et al all playing like dog dung, that is a problem, and it starts with the highest paid player ont he team. Gomez. So yes, its a problem, its the biggest problem on this team imho.

I'm not worried about Gomez. He's got another assist tonight against the Devils and is second or third on the team in scoring. However. I think we do need more fire from our coach and the Captain of this team. I'm surprised this thread is about Gomez and not about Drury.

Gomez was on fire tonight. He, and Zherdev were the only 2 Rangers who I felt were seriously giving it their all every shift out there.

I'd give it to naslund also. Lately, Zherdev has been playing great hockey. Gomez will pick it up, dont worryguys. He is a key component to our team, Drury is not.

On a few shifts I saw Naslund easily bumped off the puck, and he didn't try to fight back to get posession of it back. That bugged me. But yeah, for the most part, Naslund was fine.

Naslund is a bit older than the linemates he's playing with, but he's making it work for now. If we can make a trade and bump down Naslund to the line of Dubi/Drury, lower his minutes a bit, I think he can be more effective.

Gomez-Zherdev has to stay together, the guys simply undress defenses easily. One top scorer and that line could easily be great. We just need one finisher and a defenseman who plays with a mean streak, something cheap.

Hell, trade Drury and Gomez for the Sedins, Sign Sundin and Shanahan

Sedin Sedin Zherdev
Naslund Sundin Shanahan
Sjostrom Dubinsky Callahan
Prucha/Voros/Fritsche Betts Orr

I'll be the first to eat crow if Gomez keeps this up...but remember, two games does not a season make.
