I fully expect Tampa Bay to put in a claim on these two guys.

radim vrbata: 3M cap hit, UFA July 1st, 2011
chris gratton: 1.25M cap hit, UFA July 1st, 2009

i dont think vrbata gets picked up. 18gp, 3g, 3a. Thats not enough to warrant his salary, even if he gets hot at some point.

Gratton has 2a in 18games. He's not gonna produce offensively, but a team looking for a big body on the fourth line might pick him up. He's UFA at the end of the year, so its not that big of a risk.

So it's starting to look like running an actual NHL team like a Fantasy NHL team doesn't work so well.

Burke = Gratton??

Seems like an ideal big bodied 4th liner. At least for the remainder of the season.

Aren't Hemsky and Vrbata best friends? Maybe the Oilers will claim him.

Edit: nevermind, didn't realize he was an RW

I'd like Leafs to go for Gratton. Vrbata has too much left on his contract and too big of a hit to touch.

What'd they give up to get Vrbata again?

Pretty much. Still, though, have they gone a week without making some sort of change?

thats what happens when you give a guy $3 mil/year who didn't score in his last 23 games last season. vrbata is terrible.

He wasn't one of the guys they acquired before he hit the market? Like Roberts and Malone? Thought they did with him, too.

When Vrbata goes unclaimed, is there any chance they'll put him on re-entry waivers? It's cheaper than a buy-out(which they can't even do until the summer), is it not? I'm sure somebody would roll the dice on him for half price. He's still young, and has only two years left after this one. It's a gamble, but only for a million and a half, per year.

A couple more, semi-related questions. If a team picks up a player on re-entry waivers, thus getting him for half price, can they buy him out during the buy-out period? What portion are they then responsible for paying? What happens to the cap-hit?

Seems like Jeffy Halps might be ready just a bit earlier than expected.

I'm surprised that nothing of value was offered by anyone for Gratton. Big, good at faceoffs. Worth a 4th or 5th round pick at worst.

Vrbata was indeed a UFA. I knew going into this free agent season that he would be signed for too much by Tampa, and damn if it didn't happen exactly like that.

As for the amount of movement. The Lightning are on a seven game winless streak. Something needs to change.

Didnt see this coming. Vrbata should have stayed in the system that got him going again and now look what happened.

Atleast Tampa is making some smart choices; letting these two go should have been done a while ago.
