Hartnell Throws His Glove

Surely, this deserves a thread on it's own.
Malone has a breakaway, Hartnell's chasing him, takes his glove off and throws it at Malone. Malone doesn't score, play is called dead and Malone gets a penalty shot. All this with 16 seconds left in the game.

What's worse, my thoughts were "what a moron, he'll probably be benched the rest of the game".

Instead, Steven's puts him on the first overtime shift. I couldn't believe what i was seeing.
Hartnell played well that game but he almost lost it on one of the stupidest Flyers moves I have ever seen.
Hartnell does soemthing dumb in the heat of the moment but Steven's does something dumb because he's dumb.

I already discussed this on the main NHL board in this forum, but I'll do it here too:
I believe this was the correct decision of Stevens to NOT bench Hartnell or give him more punishment than the ridicule he already has to bear. A player should be given the opportunity to redeem himself.

I compared it with Guy Carbonneau benching O'Byrne. What Carbonneau did there was make O'Byrne even more of a scapegoat, load even more punishment onto him and destroy O'Byrne's self-confidence.

Granted, Hartnell is more mature than O'Byrne, but still it was certainly not "stupid" to put Hartnell back into the game. Harts knows it was a mistake, freely admitted to it and apologized to his teammates. Benching him would have done nothing for the team or Hartnell.

It was an unbeleivably stupid play, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. However I do like Stevens putting Harts back in, it gave him the opportunity to win the game and not be the goat. Good move by Stevens.

haha, we won, so you can laugh this is up their with niity's jumbotron incident. stupid boneheaded plays but plays you can look back on and just laugh about.

the benefit is that niity no longer watches the tron and hartnell is still his goofy self.

Harts made a really bad play in the heat of the moment, whatever.

We won if you didn't notice. If we lost then things would be ugly.

Its not any worse than anything else that people do when people have a breakaway.

Malone didnt score on his breakaway, nor his penalty shot

I've seen it a few times in beer leagues. It's mostly guys on a breakaway trying to distract the goalie.

It was a bone head thing to do, but he was giving it his best effort without a stick, maybe he thought that the throwing the glove isn't a penalty but a stick is. Not sure if the rule reads throwing a stick or throwing equipment.

You could always spin this as a positive. Throwing a glove is not going to hurt anybody. If he tried to trip him up or something there could be the potential for injury.

But it was very funny. Well after the penalty shot was over.

It's funny because it didn't hurt us.

If Malone scored on the penalty shot, Scott Hartnell directly costs us two points, in way only Scott Hartnell could do it.

And then apparently he went all McNabb and said he didn't know the rule.

Inexcusable. What an imbecile. It's one of the first rules you're taught in peewee hockey and this guy has been playing for 20 years and didn't know it.

He should have been benched for almost kicking the rebound in

Think of it this way: breakaways these days usually result in penalties or penalty shots. If Hartnell had a stick in his hand, he's probably reaching out to hook him anyway.

Just laugh at it.

All that's true but Scotty was one of our best players until the breakaway. He was skating harder or as hard as anyone on the ice all night. I was pissed and mortified that he threw the glove but no more than Sbisa coughing up yet another puck at the blue line. Luckily....Marty came up big.

It was funny as hell, and it turned out to have no effect on the outcome. So, it's something funny to look back on. If he had scored on the PS it would've gone the other way and we would hate him. That's how amazing sports are.

So we have an issue with Hartnell . . . ummm what about the friggin pourous D that gave up a breakaway with 16 seconds left?!?! I find that WAY WAY WAY WAY worse than the glove tossing.

Agreed.

I noticed Harts was the guy carrying the puck into the zone A LOT. He had his legs last night. Other then that glove toss, he was great actually.

I can deal with the defense getting beat, that happens. I can deal with a giveaway, its a mistake. What he did was absolutely retarded. Its not a mistake, its just being a complete idiot. I can deal with a mistake like the downie pass cross ice that was picked for a breakaway in the playoffs last year much more than the idiotic chipping at the puck on the boards and giving it away with nobody on him because he was trying to make something happen with that cross ice pass. Hartnell actually backchecked and thought it would be a good idea to take off his glove and throw it at a player which everyone is taught at a very young age not to do be cause its an automatic penalty shot. He basically gave malone 2 chances at a breakway instead of one because the glove didnt even effect the play. Im sorry but that was beyond dumb. I can deal with a dman pinching and getting burned or a cross ice pass bein picked for a breakaway because they are trying to make a good play but just made the wrong one in a split decision. Hartnell is retarded for this play and I cant believe people so so fine with it. I know it didnt effect the game but honestly if that were Jones chasing him down and throwing his glove people would be calling for his head whether they scored because of it or not.

There are some reasons behind a loss which I can't really deal with:

Not giving effort, mental mistakes, unforced errors, bonehead plays;

Other than the effort thing he meets all criteria.

BUT, it didn't cost us in the end, so Harts gets off the hook. May seem unfair but instead of hating on him I just laugh at his stupidity (and hope it never ever never ever happens again).

We all would laugh at McNabb too if that Hail Mary pass against the bengals would have been a touchdown and won that game. But it wasn't, totally different story and the eagles tied the ****ing now 1-10-1 bengals in a pretty much must-win.
