Ref swearing at Miller?

http://www.wgr550.com/No-Ruff-Ryan-Rift/3462075

So what were Miller and Ruff laughing about after practice?

"Me and him talking was just about the referee last night," Miller said. "I had a brief conversation with the ref where he was surprising to me, told me to 'go ___ myself' because I was just asking him a question. I was just joking around saying that's what got the bench minor going. To be honest, I was respectful, asking him a question and he told me I should maybe 'go ___ myself.' "

Earlier in the press conference, Miller had mentioned the referee.

"We had to work through being down three goals in Pittsburgh, contend with what I thought was a slanted officiating job, and we had to pull together and work. It was a nice effort from us, and that's the way it'll have to be for the rest of the year."

"I was just joking around saying that's what got the bench minor going."

So he was joking to the ref and the ref fired back "**** you", but was asking a respectful question?

Or was the joking done to someone else? I'm thoroughly confused by this line.

But I totally am not surprised that such an incident would go down.

I think Miller was joking with Ruff, that his asking the ref a question to which Miller recieved a gracious response got the penalty. Not that he was joking with the ref.

Considering it did mention that the two were laughing, you are probably right. Makes sense.

And indeed, the TBN link adds the parenthetical [to Ruff] after joking, so yes, you are correct.

That's what you get with a nob job like Justin St. Pierre calling the game. I was riding Miller pretty hard the last few days, but I like what he did here. You can't be abused by the referees verbally and through biased reffing and hide. I'm glad he brought it up.

I could almost buy that if I didn't watch the game last night.

The most interesting part of this, to me, is that if Miller and Ruff are joking around at practice, that means there's probably no bad blood from Ruff calling out Miller on his performance last week. I guess the media was just making mountains out of molehills with that one.

ding ding ding. they even mention that in the article.

but i'd like to say that i thought the article was poorly written. it was confusing to actually understand the point, who was laughing at/with who and in what context was the statement made.

• Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller believed the refereeing in last night's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins was "slanted." His feelings were reinforced when one of the referees rudely dismissed a question by responding that Miller should "go [bleep]" himself. Sounds like someone needs a little NHL-mandated anger management. Miller responded by telling the ref that his mama is so ugly, they renamed Halloween Yomammaween.

I've said it a few times before... Greg Wyshynski is the best thing to happen to the writing and reporting side of hockey in, well...ever.

It'll probably never happen, but I wish they'd go back to the 1 ref system. They're forcing too many guys up who need to spend more time in the minors. It seems like they're letting just as much obstruction go now as they did pre-lockout. Wasn't the main reason for adding another ref to cut down on obstruction? I just can't stand the inconsistencies we're seeing with the officiating. It was better when there was one ref who called everything or let everything short of murder go than it is now. It kills the flow of the game when the players don't know what to expect to be called.

Not to take away from the brilliant Justin St. Pierre, but it was Tim Peel that dropped the f-bomb on Ryan.

Sad but true.

The decline of obstruction calls over the past couple years has really hurt the Sabres. Obviously only a minor factory, but an important one nonetheless.

How do you know? Nothing I have read reveals which referee it was.
