If you could redo our free agent signings over the past 5 offseasons

Lets say you can go back in time and do over the past 5 years of free agency, what would you do to make the team more cap efficient? Sign cheaper players? Keep certain Rangers from fleeing? With contracts staying the same, meaning you cant sign Drury for 3 million, I would do this...

Add: Brian Rafalski-6 million, Sergei Gonchar-5 million, Marc Savard-5 million, Brooks Orpik-3.75 million, Georges Laraque-1.5 million, Pascal Dupuis-1.4 million

Keep: Michael Nylander-4.8 million, Fedor Tyutin-2.8 million, Petr Sykora-2.5 million

Players not signed Scott Gomez-7.3 million, Chris Drury-7 million, Mary Lou Redden-6.5 million, Michal Roszival-5 million, Dmitri Kalinin-2.1 million, Paul Mara-1.9 million, Aaron Voros-1 million

My lineup this season would be
Naslund(4)-Savard(5)-Zherdev(2.5)
Prucha(1.6)-Nylander(4.8)-Sykora(2.5)
Dupuis(1.4)-Dubinsky(0.6)-Callahan(0.6)
Sjostrom(0.8)-Betts(0.6)-Laraque(1.5)
Rafalski(6)-Orpik(3.75)
Gonchar(5)-Staal(0.8)
Tyutin(2.8)-Girardi(1.5)
Lundqvist(6.8)
Valliquette(0.7)
This would come out to 53.25 million on the cap, a 2.05 million decrease from our current roster. Hindsight is always 20/20 but this roster is clearly superior for a comparable price. Instead of 15.5 million in Redden, Roszival, Kalinin and Mara, wouldn't it be awesome if we had Rafalski, Gonchar, Orpik, and Tyutin for 17.55 million? Freeing up the 14.3 million in Gomez and Drury and opting for the more economical 9.8 in Savard and Nylander would certainly give us more money to bolster our wing. What kind of combinations can you guys think of?

How did the Rangers get Zherdev if they kept Tyutin?

I don't know but those are nice lines. I love the blue line!

Edit: You forgot to put Naslund in the add column.

Drury instead of savard
orr over laraque
jagr with nylander was deadlly no denying that.
shanahan in pruchas spot and move prucha down in for dupuis.

whats the rational behind drury over savard? savard is a premier playmaker in this league and will put up at least 65 assists and makes other players better. i love drury but he will never have that kind of impact

I can't imagine what Paul Mara can do to fill his $1.9 mill shoes if you aren't already satisfied. He was over paid last season but this season Paul Mara has been an absolute bargain. He hits, fights, chips in offensively and best of all has been solid in his own zone. As far as #5 d-men go I can't think of one I'd rather have. When he was paid as a top 4 d man it was a problem but in this role, for this money, how can you possibly complain?

see you can dream all you want about signing these guys, but who even says that these guys would want to come here in the first place, orpik chose to take less money to stay with the pens then what he was being offered around the league. personally i would still sign gomez, i wouldnt have resigned roszival, i would have resigned mara, hes been a beast this year.....idk what i would want to do differently, either way ur still spending money.

That's not what he signed for. He's making 5.5 this season.

To your lines, you just shuffle the deck chairs. There's still a lack of size and scoring on the wing.

I only would have like to keep Savard and signed Gonchar. Then one of Drury and Gomez doesn't happen, and we still get Zherdev. Also, one of Redden and Rozi does not get signed.

Well as long as we're dreaming how about we re-do the drafts as well

Zherdev - Nylander - Jagr
Shanny - Savard - Dustin Brown
Avery - Dubinski - Callahan
Sjo - Betts - Orr

Chara - Staal
Roszi - Mike Green
Mara - Girardi

there are too many permutations to go through to determine what changes I would've wanted to have occurred over the last 5 seasons. A couple off the top of my head: I wanted Savard in a bad way. Thought he would've been perfect for this team. I was for Nylander's option (I think it would've cost the team under $3MM for him to play one more season). That's a bridge, and a bridge to see how Dubi turns out and others is what was needed.

Aside from that, a physical defenseman and a versatile top six winger who can muck it up. I wouldn't have signed everyone they did either. But again, there were just too many options over the last 5 years to figure it out.

i would've kept straka-nylander-jagr together
forget drury and gomez- i'd have made a play for hossa

then you have two lines that renney wouldn't coach.

then maybe we could score.

Laraque at $1.5?? Dupuis at $1.4??

Apparently hindsight isn't 20/20. I do like the Mary Lou Redden comment though.

Avery- Cullen - Callahan
Ruutu- Betts- Orr (Before the olympics incident lol)

Staal-Gonchar
Roszival-Girardi
Leetch-Mara (yeah i wouldn't have made the leetch deal)

Lundqvist

I think that it warrants looking at what Nylander is making, the contract he signed and what he's done since he left here before lusting after him.

Jagr and Nylander instead of Drury and Gomez.

if hating on nylander was a sport, you'd be the champ.

but honestly, you don't think he would make more sense centering naslund and zherdev than dru, gomer or dubes?

i'd also rather have nylander on the books at 5 mil for 3 more years than gomer at 7.3 for 5 more

feel free to reply to this post by telling me how old nylander is though.

I don't know how he would look centering Naslund or Zherdev. On paper is does not look as good as either of those three to me. So would it make sense? I don't know.

Here's what I do know: he is being paid a lot of money for two more years after this. And age is an issue when you see what he did last year (he did not play a full half season) and what he's doing this year. At 36, you don't get better and you don't get healthier.
