Making time to practice breakouts so guys can be on the same page and know where to be on the ice comes down to coaching. Ultimately players have to execute, but a coach is responsible for designing the plan. I don't know if it's Stevens or one of his assistants who handle breakouts, but a recurring theme under Stevens is the inability to perform a proper breakout.

If he doesn't make some crucial stops in Game 7 vs. the Caps and steal the entire Montreal series, they don't make it to the Conference Finals.

And the coach is responsible for organizing the breakout strategy. That's why he's the coach. When the team has no strategy other than dump and chase, he's the reason for that.
While I'm not the biggest Stevens fan, I can't agree that he was "hardly responsible" for getting the team to the ECF. Like JXC says, ya can't blame only Stevens when things go wrong, then give him no credit when things go right.

It's been a recurring theme recently, hence why it's silly to blame the goalies.

About the goalie.

Richards ****ed up a few times on that powerplay, but it was impressive how he worked his ass off to get the puck back so it couldn't be cleared.

Long shifts tonight. The Richards line was out for a minute and a half on the power play and Carter's line also just as long.

Funny, I was just saying to a guy at work today about teams wanting to beat Philly, all they have to do is start their back-up goalie...

and here we are with Leighton in the pipes an it's 2-0 Carolina....

Richards is trying to do too much out there again. Keep it simple.

He has a strategy, the Flyers aren't executing it. Dump and chase doesn't start until you cross the red line. The Flyers can barely get it to the neutral zone, getting it to the neutral zone is the breakout, dump and chase is the offensive zone strategy.

As much as I love Upshall, that would have probably been a goal for us if it were Richie or Gags instead.
