Shannahan

I couldn't find any of the older threads regarding him, but the question does still linger now 17 games into the season.

Would he really be a downgrade from Prucha/Dawes/Fritsche? And I don't think the "its early" argument can be used anymore, the season is over 20% done and those 3 dudes combined have what 2 goals?

And hey he won't wear down as quick considering he's missed a good chunk of the season.

You couldn't find a thread? We've had like 30 of them.

We're not getting Shanny. End of story.

You couldnt find the old threads? Use the search option and try spelling his name right.

This debate is nauseating at this point.

My guess is slats is trying to make a deal that moves an extra forward and a prospect foran upgrade. But if there's no deal to be had?

Id take Shanny for one year over prucha/dawes/fritche.

Imagine if we had Shanny on Drury's wing rather than the rotating 3.

If you're gonna start a thread about some one can you at least spell their name right? The answer is no anyway, if Shanny played in the last game both teams would be going by him left and right.

The answer to that question is actually: no.

Why would I go waste 9 seconds of my life researching the exact spelling of his name when both are quite common variations of the last name.

edit: oh and he's still better than the 3 clowns in rotation who have combined for like 1 goal.

Well in my book if you're going to talk about some one you usually spell the name right, Shanahan is too slow now he wouldn't be able to keep up. I've been saying it for a while the Rangers are one top 6 short and Prucha/Fritsche are not the answer. My answer has been holding out for maybe the chance of getting Sundin which is slim.

The problem is after what those 3 have shown over the last 17 games I think he indeed would be able to keep up. And this way at least we don't have to lose anything or overpay for someone at trade deadline.

Just to be clear if some other 20 goal scorer magically popped onto our team for peanuts I'd be all for it instead of Shanny, but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't mind having him back...as long as it is as a coach and not a player.

OK Guys and Gals and All in between!

Here comes one Master (Matster) Solution if you are willing to bear with it that involves both Avery, Sundin & Shanny: It is in theory possible to fit all 3 of these guys under the cap without selling off the farm and still having a compatable D. I actually I think the trades I bring up are possible - but maybe not entirely probable. Not sure if this would be a good thing, but...Here goes anyway:
  • W Redden, N Dawes, D Byers(injured) to Dallas for S Avery, M Niskanen & J Lundqvist (injured)
  • S Avery then demoted to Hartford (temporarily?)
  • Demote Korpedo to Hartford until the POs
  • P Prucha to Ottawa for their 3rd round 2009 pick acquired from LA
  • D Kalinin + our own 3rd round pick in 2009 to Atlanta for B Exelby
  • Sign M Sundin for 5 million + bonus
  • Sign Shanny at 1,2 million + bonus

Cap implications
W Redden is saving us 6,5 million
N Dawes saves 588
Korpedo saves 1,017
P Prucha saves 1,6 M
D Kalinin saves 2,1
Total saved 11,805

S Avery - no immediate cap hit (4 million to play in Hartford for a time - also to save Dallas some face)

M Sundin Adds 5 million
C Potter adds 543
J Lundqvist adds 725
Shanny adds 1,2 million
B Exelby adds 1,391
M Niskanen adds 850
Added is then 9,709

Cap savings (with S Avery temporarily in Hartford) = 2,105

Available cap space is now at 1,2 million (+725 ev for the injured Lundqvist)
Switching Avery for Fritsche (waived or stuck in Hartford) when Lundqvist returns would then actually be a possibility. Especially after the trade deadline and into the Playoffs *(which we hopefully - but not certainly - would make).

Wow - kinda crazy thing here
This would at least make things quite exciting and add a sense of turbulence that the media would devour.
I know in a sense that this could be perceived as taking a few steps back. Signing oldies like Shanny and Sundin. But this is only short term run at the cup and gives us nice breathing space to resign vital RFAs and an UFA or 2. Our core would remain. And - we would not be giving up a plethora of future assets to put this Master Solution into place (not counting Prucha, Dawes, Dane Byers - all of which I believe most people could agree to sacrifice). Getting rid of the albatross of a contract in Wade Redden (which was a mistake) for taking back the overpaid egohead Sean Avery is a risk, but well worth taking imo. We would also demand Dallas to give us 2 younger guys (Lunqvist + Niskanen) that both have a nice potential upside, for taking their badboy Sean back. I mean - they have lost quite a lot of face here and i see them taking a deal like this which might not really be too bad for them. Hank would then also get his twin brother Joel to talk to (he would replace B betts - who has been very good btw - in a longer perspective as a 4th line defensive center) when he gets too down on his lackadaisical teammates efforts... Getting a hardhitting bottom pairing Dman in Exelby is also imo preferable to Kalinin.
Is this all just a pipedream? Probably. But it would fit capwise...
Oh - and yeah. Find a new assistant coach to coordinate the power Play. maybe our nr 1 priority now?

Näslund - Sundin - Z
Drury - Gomez - Shanny
Voros - Dubinsky - Callahan
Sjo - Betts - Orr

Fritsche, Lundqvist (injured), Avery as an eventual Joker callup

Rozie - Staal
Girardi - Mara
Niskanen - Exelby

Potter

Hank
Vally

Avery eventually goes in onto the 3rd line and Voros/Callahan slips down a line
Bring on the flaming
