San Jose winning 60 is more likely than Tampa winning only 20. But neither is very likely to happen.

To add to the discussion

SJ is on pace for 66.8 wins.
They need 38 wins in 55 games, or a .690 winning pct to reach it.<
Their currenct pct is .815

TB is on pace for 17.6 wins
They need 14 wins in 54 games to reach 20 wins, or a 0,259 winning pct
Their current pct is .214

I think TB will barely win 20 and that San Jose will win 60.

Tampa winning less than 20 is about right, but I'll more then gladly eat my words if San Jose wins more the 60.

tampa will get 20 wins

i dont think san jose will get 60 wins. keeping their current pace for an entire season is too great a feat, imo

Well, two teams in NHL history won 60 or more games. The '77 Habs and the '96 Red Wings. Even with the shootout padding wins stats a bit I still can't see San Jose doing it. Remember, Ottawa had a very similar start in the '05-06 season and it was around this time that they started to play like mortals.

Ottawa Sens 05/06:
-By Dec 5 they were 21-4(68W pace)
-By Dec 11(today) on pace 63W
-By Dec 22 they were 23-6-3(58W pace)..So in the 7 games after a huge streak they went 2-2-3.

By Jan 19 they were..31-10-4(56W pace). Good record, but nothing totally spectactular.

By the end of the season they finished with a record of 52-21-9 = 113pts..Detroit won the Presidents Trophy with a record of 58-14-8 = 124pts.

Note: Heatley started that season his new team (the Sens) on a huge high note! 22game point streak wher he accumulated 17G-21A-38pts.. Sens fans must of been going crazy!

---
On Dec 11 (today) the Sharks are 22-3-2, a 66.8W pace and an overall record of:

67-9-6 =140pts.. A ridiculous regular season record..Would break the regular season win record (62W Red Wings 95-96) by 5wins and the regular season point record (132pts Canadiens 76-77) by 8pts.

Tampa suck, big time. They won't get under 20 wins though, it's not like they're the Detroit Lions.

I can't see San Jose getting 60 wins, but they'll get close.

I think Tampa can pull it together and get a few wins. They have some talent on that roster.

San Jose has a shot, but I don't think they can get to 60. They should still win the Presidents trophy tho imo.

Nobody in the salary cap era will come close to the San Jose Sharks league record for losing like they did in their inaugural year. However, it would be quite funny to have the Sharks be the record holder for biggest winner and biggest loser.

As for the poll, I see the Sharks winning 60+ and the Lightning winning less than 20. They have the recipe for it, the Lightning, poor coaching, poor defense, average goaltending, and no identity.

I'll take the over on both. San Jose has been ridiculous this year and I could definitely see them going 62-20 or something like that.

On the other hand Tampa Bay sucks, but at least their roster isn't a miserable black hole of talent (I'm lookin at you Islanders)... They still have Lecavelier, St. Louis, and Prospal and I think Mike Smith is a pretty good goalie that is capable of stealing a few games.

The difference is: all it takes is 1 bad stretch to knock San Jose off pace, while for Tampa one good stretch basically can get them halfway to their goal. And it's easier to get one good stretch than it is to never get a bad stretch.

Tampa has a better chance of reaching 20 than San Jose does of reaching 60, although that's no guarantee that either happen/won't happen.

SJ won't win 60, and TB will break 20. I think it's harder to call with SJ.

In the middle of the season last year, the Wings were on pace to break 60 wins, but they had their top 4 dmen go down in febuary... Anything can happen.

San Jose will get 60 wins and Tampa will get over 20, thanks to the New NHL. THey will get a few more from winning in shootouts.

I really hope San Jose gets over 60.
