Game Thread, March 3rd: Montreal at San Jose.

vs

Game Time: 10:30 PM EST, Wednesday , March 3rd.
Where: HP Pavilion, san Jose, California
TV: Reseaux des Sports
Radio: Ckac AM 730

Will be the first and only Meeting this year: (Montreal (lifetime vs San Jose) ?-?-?-1) If Someone could tell me where to find that kind of info, i would be gratefull
Last year
March 6th, 2004 - Habs 3, Sharks 4 OT(Go to Bottom)

Preview:Well well well, for those of you who are following the western Conference, you know how hard a game it will be... The Sharks are one of the most balanced teams there is and manage to score when it counts. On the other hand, the habs are strong of their 5 straight wins 6 in their last 7, and would love to start the road trip with a strong win against one of the top NHL team. if we don't face another Brodeur in the net, we might be getting somewhere...
ok, ok. Little update here... With the addition of Kovalev and since a long time, Montreal will have a quality wing if Kovs shows up. We can only predict the new lines, but a Zednik, Koivu, Kovalev will give for the first time 2 quality wings to Koivu. Can't wait to watch the game tonight.

News and Notes:
. The sharks are strong of their 4 wins over the last 5 games.
. The loss was in OT against Vancouver.
. Ricci (IR) and McLaren (Day to day) got injured in the loss.
. Marleau and Sturm are leading the sharks with 48 and 40 points respectively.
. Ex-hab captain Vinny "CH tatoue sur le coeur" Damphousse has 30 points (7g-23A) (6th in San Jose).
. On the road, the Habs' record is (15-14-2-2),and (7-3-2-1) against the western conference.
. Kovalev will play is 2nd straight in 2 nights (Will he?).in 65G he has 13G 29A for 42 points.

Habs' Rumor of the moment:Kovalev traded to Montreal for Balej and 2nd round pick in 2004 (BG did his move and not a small one)
Sharks' Rumor of the moment:Leetch to San Jose to improve their PP.(rental)

Kovalev's Comments on the trade:
"Q: What are your thoughts?

Alex Kovalev: Well to start, I donít know. You know, I have to do better than I did before. I came in and I was happy, and I wish I could have done better with this organization. But I guess it just didnít work for me. Maybe Iíll just work with a younger team. Maybe down the road, if something happens, Iíll get the chance to come back and do better. Right now, I donít want to hurt a team anymore and I guess itís just time for me to move, just go back and find what I was successful at. I think that Iím looking forward to seeing. Montreal is a young team and in the playoffs. Iíll get a chance to go back to the playoffs and try to be successful.

Q: Do you know why it didnít work here again?

Alex Kovalev: I donít know. I guess you try to take too much into your own hands and try to do too much and it didnít work out. Thereís a lot more guys here that are star players. I just didnít fit it. Thatís probably what I think. I just didnít fit in with this team. Maybe I will fit in better with a young team.

Q: Does it hurt? Are you shocked?

Alex Kovalev: I was expecting that they were going to trade me. They talked about it a lot, rumors have been around for a while about most of the guys, about Leetchie (Brian Leetch) and the other guys. But I knew that eventually I was going to go somewhere so I was ready for that. I tried to still play for this organization. You canít just stop playing, so I just kept working hard. Now I am just going to another team to continue to do my best.

Q: Did you feel like when you got to this team that they didnít have a sense of how to use you?

Alex Kovalev: You are always expecting that they are going to use you for what youíre good at. Most of the guys saw what I did at Pittsburgh and when you come into a team, you expect that they are going to use you in the same direction. You canít just be focused too much on it, if they are not using you that way. You still can do a lot of the other things. I came back here and I scored a winning goal right way and I scored some goals from the beginning and everything was coming down. I was getting nervous. The season started and I thought I would just start everything over again. I would turn everything around and start playing better and actually we did play better. I wasnít playing that good. I didnít score that many goals, but the team was doing better and I wish I could have done a better job." Source From www.newyorkrangers.com

Recap from last year
---Montreal is winless in eight games and has lost four straight on the road. The Canadiens haven't won since Feb. 15 when they defeated Edmonton at home 3-2.

``It's really frustrating,'' coach Claude Julien said. ``Those are must-wins. We're certainly not finding ways to win. We're finding ways to lose. We're not finishing. Our lack of scoring has been really costly for us.''

The Sharks have killed 42 straight power plays since Feb. 12, a span of 11 games. Four of those were Thursday, covering eight minutes, including a five-on-three early in the first period.

``We showed good effort, especially on penalty killing, which was superb,'' San Jose coach Ron Wilson said. ``When you win like this it's certainly more fun than the way we've been playing.'' ----- Source: Yahoo.ca, Post-report of the March 6th match-up.

This is always my favorite game of the year. I have always liked the Sharks, not as much of the Habs of course

This is going to be our toughest test of the 4 game roadtrip but its a game I think we are capable of winning. With our defense playing the way they are, we can win any game. Like the NJ game we need to stay out of the box because the Sharks have some firepower. And IMO Nabby is the most underrated goalie in the league, although I wouldn;t be surprised to see Toskala play this game.

Looks like Audette had a good game that night

i thinks its good that we play this team first. we not as likely to be as tired. i think this will be another one goal game.

thats a nice Game thread Catala. an interesting note is that (since jan 1st) we are 8-2 in one goal games

You mentioned a rumour about Montreal aquiring Lindros for a draft pick?

A rumour was brought up that Montreal management did indeed call Sather over the past ten days. I can almost guarantee you that Gainey didn't start this. I think the rumour speculated that Gillette accidently leeked it out...tisk, tisk, tisk.

Can you smell 6 straight wins. Wouldent it be something if we equal the maple lafs winning streak from the begining of the season. I think it was 8 or 9.

Mtl are going to have to get going on the pp thow cause if we go 1for 6 or 0for 7 like we did vs the canes and the devils, the sharks are going to find a way to beat us.

Hopefuly we catch the sharks on a off night tomorow.

of note, Kiprusoff was not waived by San Jose

We need to contribute on the PowerPlay..I hope we get lots of goals early so we can then rest the top players and play more of the 3rd-4th line players .

I'll get the predictions started.

3-2 Montreal.

Incidentally, does anyone know who will be in net for Montreal?

I will be at the game! I'll take pictures for y'all. Hopefully Kovalev is there.

I think the trade might hurt us in the short-term. The team was very cohesive again and now this will throw things in the air a bit I think.

I'm a Sharks fan too (my second team of course!) and they have a tremendous team defense (2nd overall), so this will be a lot like the last two games I suspect, a low-scoring goaltending battle. Don't expect as many shots as against Jersey. Sharks are a fast team that plays solid in all three zones.

I predict a 2-1 OT win for the Sharks. They'll open it up in OT because they are from different conferences.

But then again, it's not like perreault was established as a core element of the first line...

Kovalev will help out Markov big time. There was a lot of talk about Markov being upset when Petrov was traded.
