Valiquette Has Convinced Me

Couldn't find a thread on Big Steve but I have to admit -- after watching the last few games, he's finally convinced me that he is a bona fide NHL goaltender. I've spent the last two years thinking he was an accident waiting to happen. No more.

He's a legit backup, but I don't think he would hold it together enough to be a true starter

Agreed. I will say he's got a better glove hand then Hank does.

The euphoria on this board today is pretty funny. What's next an open letter of apology to Hugh Jessimen for not 'giving him a chance' here, signed XOXOX.

Indeed. The goal on Tuesday wasn't the first time we've seen Hank make that particular fumble on what appears to be an easy head-high shot.

I used to think that Vally's good performances were just a function of an already solid defense tightening up just that much more because they knew they had to. That theory has gone completely out the window this year though, because the holes in the defense are just as big regardless of who is in the net nowadays. Agreed on Vally, I feel quite comfortable with him in net, and I actually consciously thought about how many of the chances I've seen him stop would have gone in on our starters during the dark years. Further evidence showing just how important goaltending is.

Next we'll be forgiving Bryan Trottier too.

Valli has been a very solid backup for us for a while now. Glad others are finally starting to notice.

I think to be fair, that was a weird angle for Lundqvist to grab. It was kind of in tight and not the normal glove position. He had to try to make an awkward grab, or just let it hit him in the chest/shoulder and try to control the rebound. It looked like he thought he should glove it so there wouldn't be any rebound, and it just handcuffed him

You mean he can actually catch the puck clean.

I think if he was given the chance, he could do pretty well in the NHL as a starter

Isn't that due to the glove Henrik uses? I read he uses a much stiffer glove that acts more as a blocker than a regular glove. Unless the puck stays in on its own, its hard for him to actually catch and hold the puck.

I was a big fan of the Valiquette acquisition and one of the few posters here that wasn't worried when he became our backup a few seasons ago. He's pretty much the perfect backup--he can go weeks without playing and then come in and give a good effort. On top of that, he seems perfectly happy with his role and is a great teammate. I'm glad to have him.

You're probably right. I doubt he'll be able to handle even half the workload that most top goalies in the league have to endure.

That said, he's an awesome backup. One of, if not the best in the league

Agreed... which is better than what Al Montoya looks like he'll be at this point in his career. 1-11 record, a GAA of almost 4.00, and a .864 sv% in the AHL.... yikes!

Vallys good, but the best backup in the league??

Off the top of my head...

Conklin, Lalime, Huet/khabby, Garon/roloson, Nittymaki, Leclaire/Mason

...are all better than vally.

I think some would argue kolzig, hedberg and raycroft are all better as well
