Lets hope the momentum of a perfect road trip carries into a long home stand. Hope the team resumes its tight D play as Chicago has some great dynamic players and to win the team needs to concetrate on their game. I think they can pull it off something like 4-3 Flames
Love those Hawks! Exciting team to watch. I was a huge fan of Havlat's back when he was a Sen. Plus I have Toews and Kane in my pool! I like watching young fast exciting teams like the Hawks and Caps.
Hopefully tonight I can watch them get smoked by the Flames! We've got something to prove after getting lit up last time we met. We'll have to tighten up defensively as we just don't have the guns to compete in a goal fest!
A pure Flames period. They owned that one from the opening faceoff, until the ending buzzer. They closed off the neutral zone, and were very smart defensively. Also the forwards charged back into the zone with a very very effective back check. No one on the Hawks really could get much going as the Flames were all over them every second they had the puck. Any shots that did make it through were shrugged aside by Mikka, who made it look so very easy.
The power play was fantastic. Honestly. They may not have scored, but that would be due to the Bullin Wall. They got set up quickly, passed quickly and concisely, and had great shots actually going in ON net!! Even Dion! The penalty kill was also superb. Everyone blocking shots and pressuring the Chicago special unit very solidly. They even again created offense out of thin air. I actually cheered when Lombardi shot thinking it went in.
Congratulations are in order for Iginla! With that pass of perfection to Bourque he collects his 800th NHL career point. Not only that but every time Iggy was on the ice things were happening. Bertuzzi too has been playing with a fire in his game that period. He was hitting (albeit not very hard) and making passes that could have been dangerous. And Sarich making the plays that make us love him! That diving poke check was the picture of how to pull that off without taking the tripping penalty.
Another solid period, if a bit slow starting. The Flames came out of the dressing room and really did a lot of chasing the puck. They also made a couple very bad line changes and the Hawks certainly took advantage of it. After they fell behind the Flames seemed to remember their system and they played it flawlessly from that point on. The Flames all did a great job of crashing the net at every opportunity, banging away at rebounds. This frame was also a very physical period with lots of hits and players getting rubbed out along the boards.
The power play was passable. I can't give a happier descriptor as they did great in the first chance and, well, were somewhat disorganized the second one. The first cahnce was all beauty passes and fantastic possession. They crashed the net and had a few really great shots. Then the second chance there were some overly fancy shmancy passes and no real zone penetration. The PK was again really good, until Kane walked in and slipped a shot right over Miikka's shoulder and in. No blame on that one, it was just a gorgeous shot. Tho I will say that call on Bertuzzi was absolute weaksauce. As in even weaker than my excuses to my parents about why there was booze on my breath at 16 years old.
Iginla has been Mighty this game. The score sheet may say differently but trust me, he's been making it happen every shift. Bourque too defies all description with his continued play of sheer, unmitigated awesome. Blocking shots, making passes, getting goals and laying Towes right out! What an amazing pick up!! Miikka, Moss, and Bertuzzi also deserve some kudos with their great play as well.
