yeah, it was fully in his power to nix a trade, and it was also in his power to take one for the team and go off with some class

he took the selfish route, and will be remembered for it

He could have help this team out so much by waiving his NTC. Maybe if he waived others would have followed and helped out that much more.

exactly. if he went, we wouldnt have had to buy out tucker; kubina and kaberle likely would have gone......we wouldnt have had to trade 2nd + prospect for grabo and instead we'd have higgins plus those assets to begin with

i guess mats can take solace in the fact he wont have to come to Toronto much, whereas in NY he'd have to come back to face the boo birds more than his liking

I am confused. Why would you get mad at a player who didnt want to get rid of his NTC? It is his choice. Get mad at the GM who agreed to it in the 1st place.

i like this part of the burnside article:
Quote:
At the most pivotal moments of his NHL career, Sundin has been hurt (as he was during the Leafs' surprise run to the 2002 Eastern Conference finals). When he's been healthy, he has a history of being shut down by other teams (as he was repeatedly by Bobby Holik and the New Jersey Devils during frequent playoff meetings when Pat Quinn was coaching Sundin and the Leafs). In 1999, when the Leafs also advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, it was Buffalo's Michael Peca and Alexei Zhitnik.

by virtue of having an NTC, the onus was on him to make the decision of being selfish and giving the fans the finger, or being selfless and a competitor and going off to win a Cup

how can you not be mad at someone who chose the former, only to re-neg on all the reasons he claimed he originally made that decision?

I wonder if sundin even understands that he is a huge lying b#$%H, Does he even get that he looks ridiculous going on with that huge not being a hired gun speech and then goes out and does it????

Or will he read that Burnside article and be surprised.

What a ******

Like I said in another thread....

Mats Sundin - February 25, 2008

"I have never believed in the concept of a rental player. It is my belief that winning the Stanley Cup is the greatest thing you can achieve in hockey but for me, in order to appreciate it you have to have been part of the entire journey and that means October through June. I hope everyone will understand and respect my decision."

**** You Mats

that is all.

The best part of all of this is he really wanted to be a Ranger (even said MSG and New York was his favourite place to play), but that never worked out. I will laugh if his team gets ousted in the first round and the Rangers go further.

Mats I will always remember the way you put the Leafs before yourself.

Like when we made you a top three money maker in league history and you couldn't leave us for two weeks because your pompous ass doesn't wanna win in the playoffs.

I just feel bad you guys didn't get Bobby Ryan for him.

To be fair, I respect that he believes in being with a team from October to May, oh wait.

Hang his jersey in the ACC washroom, inside a stall... What a rip off "wants to retire in Leafs Jersey" After all these years of lying, you sack of Blake's excrement.. I guess all those millions he made here wasn't enough.

ah I'm not that mad at AJ. BJ's aren't even close to be honest (in fact I didn't even want him back for another 3-4 mediocre years, and 3 months of good contract year pitching), and no one should have honestly believed he had any allegiance to Toronto. Mats on the other hand, we held him to high standards. That's the part that people miss, if just anybody did this that's one thing but people expected more from him, otherwise a stand up guy and class act.

I don't think it would nearly been as bad if he went to a different team. I despise Vancouver and their fanbase.

**** Sundin "OHH he's our captain" ******** man, Gilmour and Clark were traded because their time had come and it was best for the team.... Sundin did what was best for him, I think he owed some debt to this franchise and it's fans....

Cmon guys, ease of the hate. Mats Sundin played 13 fricken years for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's played for some pretty good Leaf teams and some pretty bad leaf teams but not once did he complain or want out of the organization. He's been a total class act from the minute he was was a Maple Leaf.

It's ridiculous how people are calling him a "hypocrite" for going to Vancouver now when he could've been traded last year. The guy maintained all of last year that he wanted to remain a Leaf, win a Stanley cup, and hopefully retire as a leaf (this was despite the fact that we were no where near contending for the Stanley Cup). Then the trade deadline came and EVERYONE went ape**** on Mats Sundin for wanting to stay in Toronto. Everyone basically made him feel unwanted in the city of Toronto.

Now we fast forward to this year - why would Mats Sundin want to come back to Toronto? Why would he want to come back to a city that treated him like s*** after he gave us 13 years of classiness. From the viewpoint of Mats, he probably felt betrayed. On top of that, a large majority of fans didn't even want Mats Sundin back anyways.

So why are we so peeved that Mats Sundin is signing with another team? Because he didn't waive his no-trade clause last year? Cmon guys, maybe Mats Sundin genuinley meant it when he said that he wanted to retire as a leaf. But here's the thing, Mats Sundin is Swedish, and a pretty darn good hockey player, but he's human as we are. Maybe he changed his mind, maybe he wanted to play hockey after all. Can we actually be mad at Mats because he's not playing for the Leafs anymore even though we treated him like S*** last year?

Being a Captain means you do whats best for the team. Its not like he is 27 year old and would be with us for another 10 years. He was almost done and the best thing for everyone would be for him to leave.
