Some Jackets love from ESPN

I didn't know if this was worth a new thread, but I couldn't find an existing one to stick it in:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/...=lebrun_pierre

"The last time we checked in on the Columbus Blue Jackets for you puckheads was about a month ago, when we predicted dire things for the NHL club after it lost sensational rookie center Derick Brassard.

Ah, the egg is on your blogger's face right now.

The Jackets have not only survived, but they have also found a way to gain traction in the tough Western Conference standings, sitting in the last playoff spot by one point before NHL action Thursday night............"

Thats a good read, an outsider's view looking in on recent events. Thanks for the link.

Oh dear.

Quote:
"We know Willy [Jason Williams] from playing against him when he was in Detroit and Chicago," said Hitchcock. "We need that type of element with us. With the loss of Brassard, we have to have someone that can fill that hole. We were missing players at center ice. He brings an element on our team, especially on the power play, being a right shot, that we don't have."
I'm fairly sure he's talking about "offensive plays from the center of the ice" or whatnot, but as soon as I saw that the first thing that came to mind was "how soon before we see a post along the lines of 'OMG WTF WILLIAMS IS NOWHERE NEAR BRASS [HOWSON/HITCH] IS A MORON'".

Maybe I'm getting overly cynical, though.

Thanks, Howson, for cleaning up MacLean's toxic waste. Welcome, Kekalainen; let's get good things built!

Good read. Nice to see the Jackets get some positive press from the national media.

ESPN still covers hockey? I'll be damned.

Ha! Love it.

I do long for the days when Gary Thorne announced on ESPN. I would weep tears of happiness if they replaced Rimmer and Gare with Thorne and Clemment.

I have grown to like Rimmer and Gare...but you may be surprised...that you will probably get jumped for liking Thorne and Clemment. I love the two...but for some reason...a few on here dislike them a lot.

Clement is part of the Flyers broadcast team, as is Keith Jones.

I'm shocked to learn E-SPIN has a "hockey writer".

Wish we could do color analyst trades like the league does player trades...

Rimmer/Gare for Olczyk/Emrick

Yeah, I haven't really found a color guy I like, so I threw Clement in there because of the lack of alternates. Although when I watched the feed for the last CBJ @ Sharks game their color guy was hysterical. Aggresive, knowledgable, and a he never sounded drunk.

All I read was "We have to have someone that can fill that hole" and then I thought... wait, doesn't USC do that for ESPN already?

Yeah I really like the Sharks guys too; I forget their names but I'm pretty sure I've seen at least one of em on HNIC before. In any event, they sounded professional the whole time, which was cool.

But anyway aside from HNIC guys (there's just no comparison) I'd pick Gary Thorne and Brian Engblom (who, a few may remember, did our color commentary in the season after the lockout ) That guy was great, and I think I remember him doing work on ESPN in the 90s as well.

EDIT: The thing that strikes me the most though about other teams is how "generic" sounding their commentators are. At least when you're listening to Rimer/Gare you can tell they sound different (for better or worse... )

But I mean, if you hear Gary Thorne's voice, or Jim Hughson or Bob Cole from HNIC, you know who it is; they definitely stand out against all the other generic guys out there.
