Whats the missing piece in your opinion?

So, many people would argue that the Habs are underperforming this year. If you recall going into this season we were slated to rule the east again, and while we have certainly not falling off the map we have slipped into the middle of the playoff pack jumping around 4th and 5th place in the East.

Our Power play has clearly suffered for whatever reason. It could be argued that Streit (and Souray before him) was more critical to its success (with their quality slap shots, etc.) and thats why the PP has suffered.

It could also be argued that the Habs are still lacking an elite top 6 clutch forward. Obviously, this was the reason we went after Sundin in the post season. Alas we did not get him and had to settle for Lang, although Lang has proven to be a VERY formidable consolation prize.

In short I feel we are indeed missing something, but I'm not entirely sure whether it is a Top 4 D PP specialist or a Top 6 elite clutch forward that we are missing. What are your thoughts? Do we need a Gaborik type player in an elite young forward. Or is our PP woes and defensive problems really what needs to be fixed in a JayBo type top 4 D man? I also included the option that we are totally fine and all we need is a healthy team and we have the winning recipe. Tell me what you think.

Top 4 Defenceman obviously.

Whether or not we can realistically acquire one or even clear enough space for one is a WHOLE different discussion.

I don't think its that obvious. I mean I know it would make our team vastly better, but having a Kovalchuk type guy who could play the point on the PP could be equally as good and possibly much better, especially considering how well Gorges and Breezer (to a lesser extent) have been playing this year.

Top 4 D. The Kovalchuk/Gaborik is nice but we have huge talent on this team, we need a better defence to support our forwards. We only have 1 true Offensive D, markov. Hamrlik is a two-way D and his point totals won't be increasing as time goes by.

We added tanguay/Lang +progression of younger players, lost ryder/smolinski. We scored what 1st or 2nd in goals last year? our forwards were fine, we even upgraded, I don't think we need a kovalchuk. Obviously, would be great to have, but it's not the problem. We have enough talent and skill up front, not to mention d'ags also made the team now(unoffocially). Only reason one could even suggest kovalchuk is because he plays the point on the PP, other than that...great player, but defence wins championships, having a guy like jay bo puts is in a better situation than a kovalchuk.

it's a PP specialist, a souray or striet type of player. Someone who could not only shoot but actually get a shot past the first defenseman. We seem very reluctant to shoot from there, and we all know Markov is mostly a passer.

I really think a top 6 forward who has a natural skill of scoring is the key..

Face-off/PK specialist should be an option...unless you're satisfied with our PK?

We need Manny!

A top 4 D, + a pure goal scorer, + a gritty-sandpaper-occasional-fighter top 6 able to score 15-20 goals a year...

...and then, Habs would be set to face the Red Wings-Sharks of this world...

An offensive superstar player like Kovalchuk IMO.Goalie and defence we are fine but we are still missing some punch out there, scoring for us is not that easy this year

True, actualy if we can have a forward that can be good on the PP that would be better, but i voted J-Bo because no forward on the suposedly market interest me. Only Kovalchuk (who's a bomb on the point) but i doubt that he is realy on the market.

Agreed, that is part of it.

...also it's as simple as we need to pucks in the net. When you look at the goal totals of the players on this team, outside of Lang, Tanquay, and D'Ago almost every single player on this team is capable of more.

Also a healthy lineup could really help.

Higgins-Koivu-A.Kost

...that's a pretty good line we are missing right now.

missing peice(s) get rid of Lats, bring up Pacioretty. Also bring up Webber to play the point on the power play.

Streit was a forward last year. And yet people vote for a top 4 D-man.

Because at any given day we're playing breezer or o'byrne, sometimes both. It's not alarming, but a top 4 D is for an upgrade. Anahiem had a solid D, they won the cup. Detroit had a solid D, they won the cup. It's one of those things that we'd be better off if...but it's not mandatory. We have plenty offense up front, some offensive ability from the back end wouldn't hurt the team.
