I think that we're missing both personally. But even with that, I still say that the natural scoring ability can still come back to haunt us in the playoffs like it did last year.

I say we miss the second half of the season, when we come back from the christmas break the team will dance like a Kostytsyn (on cocaine in a downtown club) and sting like a George Laraque.

A 40 goal scorer with a burr in their saddle and a point to prove. Where do we get one?

I really do believe we need a defenceman who can man the point, but I do not think we need to go big (J-Bo) or go home (do nothing). A really do think that we can get an actual specialist. I think we should look at somebody like Paul Ranger. He is having a little bit of a tough year in Tampa Bay, however I think that by bringing him into a more specialized role in Montreal he could really succeed.

Everyone knows we have good D prospects and will be fine in the future. The problem is now however.
Who said next year? At the end of the season...weber=1 pro season. Carle is in his second. If it's that major and they've progressed(which is unlikely but you wait and see) by march, you take them. Otherwise you make the move if there's a good deal in place.

Our Power play has clearly suffered for whatever reason. It could be argued that Streit (and Souray before him) was more critical to its success (with their quality slap shots, etc.) and thats why the PP has suffered.

It could also be argued that the Habs are still lacking an elite top 6 clutch forward. Obviously, this was the reason we went after Sundin in the post season. Alas we did not get him and had to settle for Lang, although Lang has proven to be a VERY formidable consolation prize.

In short I feel we are indeed missing something, but I'm not entirely sure whether it is a Top 4 D PP specialist or a Top 6 elite clutch forward that we are missing. What are your thoughts? Do we need a Gaborik type player in an elite young forward. Or is our PP woes and defensive problems really what needs to be fixed in a JayBo type top 4 D man? I also included the option that we are totally fine and all we need is a healthy team and we have the winning recipe. Tell me what you think.
Streit was the big loss.

We could see a foreshadow of its magnitude when he played quite hurt in last year's playoffs and the PP failed.

Streit might not be a top-4 DEFENSIVE defenceman, but we have Josh Gorges for that. However, Streit is light-years ahead of Brisebois as a 6th defenceman and offensive specialist. In fact, he pushes Bouillon down to 6th.

It was a mistake not to offer him the $2.0M for three years he says he would have re-signed here for. Not only did he put up 62 points, but he was part of the chemistry of this team, IMO, and could play any role asked of him, including PK forward, WELL.

That's because it's not needed as his record as a head coach can attest.

Are you sure? Because if it was me i would order Laraque to physicaly assault everyone on the ice... And also the Kostytsyns would be joint together (something god should have done himself at their birth). Not doing that makes him THE problem on that team.

I'm not sure, I'm convinced. It could be Scotty Bowman in there and there would be decisions that could be contested. There are too many options out there and no decision will be unanimous.

I would not want to give up Patches or McD. I think we could do without Higgins though, but Im not sure about trading him when his value is bottomed out.

I replied the Top 4 D option, but not for the PP reasons, just because our bottom pairing of Bouillon-Brisebois/O'Byrne is not something I'd like to rely on in the playoffs. I'd like to have a SOLID 3rd pairing, night in, night out, not a 3rd pairing we have to hide or cushion. I'd be more than happy with a reliable #4 or #5 Dman to fill that role. I think our PP is on its way to getting fixed with our current cast and our offense should pickup when at least 2 or 3 of Plekanec/Higgins/Andrei/Sergei/Latendresse start putting up points more consistently...

An acquisition to fill this need doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg (i.e. Boumeester/Kaberle), but could be a guy like Derek Morris.

I think this team could use some more jam as a team up front. They could also use a d-man to turn the big 3 into the big 4.

I think this team has it in them to play with some jam upfront. They just have to get it together at the right time. I love how the 4th line plays but besides that line, I think the the team relies too much on sheer skill.

The priority for me remains in finding that top 4 d-man.

I still believe that the PP will sort itself out so it doesn't need to be a pb qb. It just needs to be someone who is hard to play against in the defensive zone. A Ruslan Salei type. (Although his contract status makes him less appealing, but thats the type of guy the habs could use imo.)

You have no disagreement from me with the loss of Streit. Last season my signature was Streit - Top 4 For Sure!....I thought he was a critical addition to our team and our veritable swiss army knife.

His record should be better with the talent we have. I don't think he is a terrible coach, but I don't see him winning a cup unless Price turns into Patrick Roy.

There is no way Streit signs for 2 mil with the Islanders having a 5 year 20 mil contract on the table. Last year in the playoffs everyone wanted to thow him under the bus, now you all want him back because the PP has struggled. Priceless!

At the money he was being offered, Streit was no longer an option. I have no problem trying S.Kost and Tanguay, and looking for other options. I'd rather be a top team with an average PP than an average team with a good PP. Now that Kovy has his confidence back and they are sticking Latendresse's big frame in front, the PP is much improved.

When people say Top 4 D.....are they hoping for #1, #2, #3, or #4? Honestly this has to be answered 'cause I don't have to tell anybody that there's a world of difference between the 4. And since I would also love to have a centerman with size, I would go for:

1- #4 d-man to play with Hammer.
2- #2/#3 centerman, #3 if we're confortable having Lang as #2.

I'm ready to give O'Byrne, Higgins, Pleks, picks and kids (except MaxPac)

Can you clarify the title, what's the missing piece in your opinion, refers to the opinion. Mine would be knowledge and imagination though I'm not sure about the rest of you.

The Habs record as 4th best defense in the whole league and 4th best average at even-strenght disagrees with you.

Their winning percentage does too.

Yeah he's nothing special even though he was a runner-up to the Jack Adams and didn't have an Ovechkin to save his ass in many games.

Considering that we don't have a stud at forward and that we're three deep at the back end, relying on a (good) 21 year old in net who will become a star (but isn't quite there yet), I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that he has done a good job base on his coaching record.

SUSF.

I still say Gainey doesn't need to add a player to the PP, but the PK. The Power Play will be strong after the break.

Yeah, they've shown some life lately. They were 5 for 17 in the last three games. If they can keep a steady pace, they should be back at 20%+ in a matter of weeks.
