Try 5 Hour Energy. Same boost as Energy Drinks but without the sugar crash. It's great when I workout and need that extra boost.

now don't forget to make you hold the products label toward the camera in the commercial

I've used it a couple of times. Absolutely LOVED it the first two times. Had such jump I was scaring myself. Then it just stopped having an effect. My metabolism is a little strange but I have no idea why it no longer worked to I went back to just plain old gatorade and a candy bar right before the game

I've been testing it too and it seems that you build up a tolerance to it pretty quickly.

how about a good 1 hour power nap ? wake up 1 1/2 hrs. before the game and down a black tea (with three tea bags in it)while getting dressed for the game.

I only get that feeling about 2-3 times a season. How do you guys manage to get it every single game? I tried stretching, sprinting before the game, taking smelling salts, banging my head against the boards,....

How do you do it? How do you get that extra edge?
I don't really believe that things like smelling salts and certain rituals have any effect on the way you play a game. If you want it on a consistent basis, the only answer is to work 200% harder than everyone else. Don't goof off in practices, devote your time away from the rink to getting stronger, faster, more alert, better reflexes, etc. Even if you're a good skater, find a good skating coach. Go to as many open skates as you can, and try to play against the highest quality players you can find. If you get smoked, keep coming back for more. When I was playing for my high school, I would frequently go to the rink where the Amerks (AHL) practice and observe, and after a while I even got to skate with them about a dozen times or so. It's a great learning experience, especially because it instills a sense of higher pace and urgency in you because they play the game so much faster. Eventually you'll start to bridge the gap, and when it comes time for you to play a regular game, you'll be at another level.

I used to listen to certain music before games thinking that it would get me "in the right mindset" but to be honest, if you're not in the right competitive mindset when you get to the rink (and when you're eating your meal hours before the game) then you're really not coming prepared. As the great Roy Keane said, "Failure to prepare. Prepare to fail."

It normally takes me a big hit before I do something like that... If I lay a big hit receive a big hit or score I tend to be pumped for the rest of the game... as a result I look to hit as soon as the game or my shift starts... It's just a matter of getting your head in the game...

Beyond the obvious - eating right, being in shape, etc. - I always found that if I could warm up with my helmet off - it was just a great feeling to have a bit of a breeze in my face before getting started.

Its no substitute for the proper preparation, but its something quick and easy that gets my mind in gear.

Had a 10:00pm game last night.

Ate Chicken and pasta with tomato sauce around 3 hours before the game.
Took a b-12 and a multivitamin about 2 hours pregame.
Drank a 32 oz gatorade and 2 12oz Beers about 30 min pregame.
Vitamin Water ( REVIVE ) and plain ol H2o during game.

Also quitting smoking about 45 days ago has given me a little extra jump.

I turn 42 this coming sunday so it gets tougher and tougher to fire to engine up for these late games....We have a 10:55pm start next week.

Beer before a game... that sounds pretty counterproductive.

I was always told, and believed, that drinking a lot of fluids the day of a game wasn't that good since it would just end up bloating your muscles; I was told you should drink a lot of water the day prior to a game that way your muscles could absorb the fluids and make them useful.

I do find gatorade during the game helps a lot for refueling and I think I'm going to give that 5 hr energy stuff a shot. It's tough when games are at 10pm or 11:30pm and you've been up since 530am on weekdays, there's only so much a nap can do in those circumstances. The league I'm in plays it's games on Fri. and Sat. nights which is good b/c there's no way I'd be able to get up for work the next day if they were during the week.

beers before the game, really? I have so much as a sniff of one, and I'm dehydrated by the middle of the 2nd period.

After the game is another story though.

Increse the intensity too (more resistane or more speed), and the duration of your repetitions (45 seconds up to 1 min 15 sec if you can...)
+1 on this. I started doing some anaerobic work a few weeks ago and I'm already reaping the benefits of it.

1. Be in shape.
2. Eat a good meal a few hours before the game.
3. Take a one or two hour nap a few hours before the game.
4. Drink lots of water all day before the game (this tends to work wonders for me).
5. Have a good work ethic.... never stop skating until your legs are in pain and even then keep giving your all. Nothing worse than some schmuck who takes their sweet ass time backchecking and doesn't skate hard every time that's necessary. I'm not talking about being the guy who skates up and down all game and is never in position, but the times when you need to haul ass, you do it. Give everything you got, everytime.

I have a routine on gameday that seems to work. I don't know if it makes sense from a nutritional standpoint- it may be as much psychological as anything else.

breakfast: Eggs, whole wheat toast, some sort of juice
Lunch: Pasta with veggies
Dinner- some sort of salad with chicken

Energy bar 1.5 hours before the game
Drink at least 8 glasses of water during the day
Avoid caffeine (which I do anyways)

I duno about that 5 hour energy drink, but the guys on my team that drink red bull, etc tend to crash about halfway through the game. Some of them will pound another one on the bench. I try to stay away from all that.

Talking thrash and hard battles in the corner usually gets me in the game, I always have a slow start though.
