im a die hard ranger fan and have been since i was born.
im sure many people know this, but the reality of the situation is the rangers are just an average team.
we're full of 2nd and 3rd line players.
gomez-great 2nd line center, but a 2nd line center none the less.
zherdev-loads of talent getting better by the day, but at the moment a border line 1st line player.
naslund-washed up talent 2nd liner.
dubinsky-gonna be very good plays hard, but at the moment 2nd line center maybe 3rd line.
dawes-future 2nd liner, but as of now no better than a 3rd liner.
callahan-a great 3rd line player, but nothing more.
drury-best 3rd line center in the game, but no better.
voros-4th liner, 3rd liner at best.
sjostrom-plays hard but a 3rd a liner.
betts, orr-4th liners. korpikoski-future 3rd liner.
girardi has been good, but hasnt been as good as some people say.
redden has been awful.
staals been amazing, and so has mara.
kalinin has been the 6th d-man we expected.
rozy had a slow start, but has picked it up lately.
lundqvist-world class goaltender.
this teams loaded with 3rd liners and a few 2nd liners.
peoples expectations coming into this season for them were WAY to high.
and everybody really needs to stop saying gomer and drury suck because of their contracts, last time i checked sather is the one to blame.
i mean hey if someone offers you 9 million dollars what would you do? say no?
i think not.
Seems like last night's game is a microcosm of the season to date. Jump out to a big lead, thanks to some great effort, but also some shoddy play by a mostly AHL defense. Even at 3-0 and 4-0 it seemed as if we were not playing as well as the score indicated. The Caps were getting chances as well, but Hank was holding the fort and outplaying the opposing netminder. It really wasn't a shock at all when the Caps came back.
And you can make an argument this is the way our season is going right now. We're up 4-0 (actually 22-12-3), but it seems like we really haven't 'earned' first place. Our goalie has outplayed the opposing goalie more often than not, but recently not as much. We've gotten a lot of points from a skills competition, and while we've earned and deserve every single point we have, it's easy to not be confident that trend will continue. And we've been very lucky.
And now, with the Devils, Flyers and Penguins all catching up to us...WHILE dealing with multiple injury problems, it feels like it's no longer 4-0. It's 4-1, and the opposition is coming on strong. We've seen this movie before.
Can the trend be reversed? Absolutely. Everyone just has to play better. Uh oh.
