I don't see any future for Chipchura with the habs.

He will fill Lang's role next year as the third line center.

I think he has a future with the Habs. What that role may be short/long term and how it could change is up in the air right now, but I think he brings a useful skillset to the team despite whatever question(s) people have about his skating.

He has size, which is no bad thing, he uses his size/strength better than most on the team right now along the boards and to protect the puck, he knows where to be on the ice at both ends, he has good hands and a decent shot in the slot, he can kill penalties and potentially save a top 6/9 guy some energy on the PK, he will protect himself/teammates when needed. Plus, with all the potential big contracts being handed out this summer to retain free agents, his cheaper contract may be very useful to have. Whether he gets a big chance this year is a tough call.

When healthy, he has played his role in Hamilton as well as D'Agostini played his, so there is potential for him to play his way onto the team. If he gets a chance due to someone else being injured though (not unlikely, this year), as long as he is healthy, he looks like he can step in and do a decent job in the NHL without showing some of the weaknesses a rookie like Maxwell has shown on occasion. In short, if called upon this year, his game is at a level where he deserves a look.

What role he may be given if he gets another shot this year depends on the health of the team. But he could step in on either of the bottom two lines and take the strain IMO. Next year, depends on Lang and what contracts are handed out/how much cap space remains, but again he could take a role in the bottom 6. He could be given time to learn on the 4th line, or could be given a bigger role on the 3rd line and with the way Lapierre has played lately, we'd have an option within the team if the 3rd line proved to be too much for him.

We have a pretty stacked team this year when everyone is healthy, but with all the contracts that will be up this summer I think it improves his chances to remain and find a role. Once he is healthy again (which he may be by now) and playing games, we shall see if he continues to play as well as when he was sent down. If he does then I think he is an easy choice for next forward callup, should that situation arise this year.

I would think he'll see some time with the Habs this year and be a full timer next year. Was having a great season in Hamilton before the groin injury.

It's hard to tell, if he can play good defense with some solid offensive contribution, he's here to stay however if we continue to be a 3-offensive line hockey team and he can't fit the profile on the 3rd line...he may be shipped off to another team.

Quick question:

Any good centers available july 1st?

I do think he was drafted for a reason and a specific role as a shutdown defensive oriented 2 way forward which the Habs don't have in the system right now.

If he is traded which I am not against I want to see a good return for him.

A future selke candidate with a 40-50 point upside? Yeah, he's going to be a mainstay on the team either for the play-offs or next season.

He has an nhl future, but it is on the wing. Chipchura is not able to be an effective nhl center.

I would say the same. The fact that he struggles on face off (unless he corrected it this year...) and his lack of foot speed makes me think he could be a great two way winger on a 3rd or 4th line at worst. Sutter used him as a winger at the WJHC and I think this is where his future is.

No question Kyle is a NHL player, and he will be next year full time.

Habs third line center for years to come. Will have the kind of impact Carbo had on the Habs, a natural leader, a competitor born..

Exactly, it is a numbers game right now and if not for the injury he would be up and Maxwell wouldn't.

Agreed !!

What a waste of a first round pick this guy is !!

A future turtle on skate with 4th line upside who will probably be nothing more than a Career AHLer...

Just ship this guy out of this town Bob, while he might still have some value... And bring his friend Higgins with him too if you don't mind Mr. Gainey...

I have to agree with you. His offence is really underrated and people complaining about his speed really overblow it. I'd say he's faster than Lang and he's doing a good job so far. It's all about positioning in the defensive role, not speed. Faceoffs he can work on. If speed and faceoffs are that damn important in shutting down then Lapierre would be one of the best shutdown players in the league, which he clearly is not.

Chipchura should be on the team now because he should have stuck last year. When he makes it next he will stay.

1) he was injured when maxwell got the call-up
2) he's not paid a million to be in the ahl. he gets paid a mil when he's on the NHL roster.

Nearly PPG in the minors. That doesn't mean he'll make that here, but he's got some offense in him. He's solid defensively, has leadership and has size. He's a blue chipper IMO. Maybe not with us though.

I agree, Chipchura is underrated offensively. I think he can be a solid contributer, however, if he's not, he may be replaced.

If he could define his role as a 4th line winger he would do ok. His footspeed has improved. He oozes hockey sense, is gritty, and has hands but the role of center seems a tad overwhelming for him. I would like to have seen him play on the wing with an offensive minded center. He can fight for the puck and distribute it and can go to the net and make plays in close but he is a complimentary player that would benefit playing with someone with some skill. This scotch is tasty!
