Why not use the back door?

Not to go nhl09-esqe but i remember last year on the PP(which was slightly less terrible) at least the back door pass was attempted here and there (via gomez to avery vs debbies) and roszival used to sneak in and so on.

But this year i have yet to see them use it a single time whatsoever ,its as if they WANT the PP looking terrible.

thoughts?

the backdoor pass works really well if you have a guy in the slot a few feet away from the crease, when we have guys at the net, it always seems to be right on top of the crease, in which case you can have 1 defender defend that guy, and the guy for the backdoor play. the backdoor play doesnt work in that case.

You need to have 2 guys up high who are willing and able to blast it at any given time, then you need someone in the slot, and your 2 wingers roaming down low. We tend to have 2-3 forwards all on the same side, and our defense doesnt shoot enough.

If your D shoots, you pull forwards up high to guard against the shot, then you can leave yourself open for the backdoor pass, a quick pass to the slot and a shot, or a scramble play if the backdoor pass fails where the guy from the slot tries to get the rebound.

Of course this assumes you have some sort of PLAN on the PP. Ive been watching the Tom Renney PP for 3 years. year 1 the plan was to get Jagr the puck and GTFO of the way. year 2 was to get Jagr the puck and GTFO of the way. year 3 the play is to get Jagr....uhh....damn it!

I never knew/used that. Maybe I will start tool... back in topic,

Yeah, I think that's how Rosi scored almost all of his PP goals. Imagine Nasi taking Rosi's spot at the point and doing that. His ability to find the open ice and good timing he would always be open. He doesn't do that anymore and since we already give up a load of Short handed attempts we might as well start doing it again. (Maybe they are saving it for the playoffs

Because the players actually have to be moving for this to work instead of standing still.

Stole my post...grr.

But yeah, watch our Power-play a little more closely. Nobody moves without, hell even with the puck.

Ha.

I was reading your sig about dubinsky and now that I think about it...That Jagr-Dubi-Avery line was pretty creative. They used to move east to west and do drop passes and made everything look pretty. Maybe that's why he plays so well with Zherdev... Same kind of game. Anyways I wish for one game Renney said... "Ok you guys do it your way. Do what you feel will work and I will sit back. After that we can see who's way is better"... I really hope their way is.

This play only works well if you have Holmstrom in the slot annoying and screening the goaltender down low. You need one guy who can really stick handle behind the goal, either a Datsyuk/Zetterberg, then either Datsyuk/Zetterberg needs to be cruising around the slot, Lidstrom is top of the left circle to take the long shot and you right dman only slightly pinching. Shanahan and Yzerman used this play effectively as well. You don't blast the shot because the rebound will come too far out and start an oddman rush the other way.

There are not enough skill players on the Rangers to pull this off. And, the ones who could don't shoot. One thing that Shanny brought with him was his intelligence with the puck. He could anticipate where the puck needed to be, how it should be handled and get it there. When was the last time you saw a Ranger bank a puck off the back of a goaltender for a goal?

Too many times this season we have seen the Rangers chopping and slashing at the puck in a manic panic. It's a hot potato on their sticks. They should try caressing it, moving it intelligently and purposefully.

Well, we're already giving up shorthanded goals at an alarming rate with no PP success... Do you think anybody would notice if we had one of our point guys sneaking into the slot area? At least we might score once in awhile in addition to giving up goals on the pp.

Exactly, that is the problem with the powerplay. NO one moves to get open. We just stand in our positions and then every once in a while we'll throw the puck behind the boards and try to win battles. That does nothing. I can't even watch the PP anymore, I have to leave the room because I get so frustrated.

So I'm a "bum" now for inserting some humor in a reply that Tom wouldn't allow his players to get "creative".

I didnt directly called you a bum but if you wanna take it that way sure.

It was plain obvious people would take the title out of context therefore its not funny to me

You started the thread, so if it was "plain obvious" that people would take things out of context, and not be "funny" to you, then maybe you should have used a different title. You do ask for "thoughts"? Anyway, I do agree with you that backdoor passes and creativity has not been seen all year on the PP, (hence my reponse that Tom dosen't like it so most likely it won't be seen). You would think that the way the PP has been, some form of change up will be implemented, but again, Tom won't tinker much.
