TSN: Phoenix Financial Woes

TSN has received an exclusive document showing the NHL is giving money to the coyotes, who are going to loose 30 Million dollars. The owner bought the team for 120 M, and has lost more than 200 Million on this team since his purchase.

"A source told The Globe and Mail the Coyotes have already talked to the city of Glendale about renegotiating their 30-year lease at Jobing.com Arena. Under the current agreement, only a declaration of bankruptcy would allow the Coyotes to break the lease and relocate the team."

Hamilton Coyotes? Quebec? Winnipeg?

Gary Bettman is having nightmares...I can't wait to see his face because now Canada is going to have one more team.

I want to buy this team, and my first move would be to fire Gretzky, and hes the worst coach in the NHL in my opinion. I would'nt be surprised to him end up in Tampa Bay as coach. Only if I had the cash...

Bob McKenzie was talking about this on the TEAM990's morning show monday. Both Tampa and Phoenix had problems paying their players' salaries and the league had to step in. Then they joked about how Phoenix's owner could take a page out of the book of Nashville's ownership, making deals with shady characters and all that fuzzy business. We can only wait and see.

Someone needs to fool Guy Laliberté in thinking that hockey is as glamorous as F1 so he builds a new arena in Québec for the Cirque du Soleil and his new team.

Give credit to Yvon Pedneault on being right saying stuff like this would happen sooner than later.

Remember I posted about it a month or so ago?

It would be poetic justice for Winnipeg to get the Jets back. And Shane Doan would stand as the last survivor of the great walk through the desert (Litterally) to come back home.

Nah. If TSN says it might happen, it's already a done deal. It's like an E5.

I think some of you are misinterpreting the article, especially the part mentioning relocation.

That said, if eventually the problems in Phoenix get that bad, is Portland still an option? I'd imagine the league wants to keeps some teams out west...

Give him credit for saying something everyone and their grandmother have been predicting for the last 5 years?

"That's it back to Winnipeg"

Eventhough everytime the habs came to town my mom could never get tickets it would still be nice to see NHL caliber hockey live. As unlikely as it is that the NHL would ever return it's still nice to hope.

Trade proposal

to PHOENIX a few mtl fans
to MONTREAL Peter Mueller, Kyle Turris, Michael Boedeker and Keith Yandle

Seems fair to me.

One thing the really sticks out to me is how come the NHL is giving the Coyotes and possibly the Lighting money.
Why did they not give money to the jets and Nordiques (and Whalers) when they needed it... Let Phoenix and Colorado get expansion teams instead.
That's what I would like to know.

It would be amazing.
Well..not for the boards, but for the rivalries.
The Fans would make revive this rivalry over night, even when most of the players that would be playing each other weren't even playing in the NHL when the Nordiques existed.

It would simply be awesome.

I picture it in my head as a bunch of land mines going off as Nordiques sleeper agents on this board reveal their true colours and claim they never liked the Habs all along.

Different times and none of those teams were in danger of folding midseason.

Two teams toppling like that could literally kill the NHL.

They'll fund them through the season, is my bet, and move one to Toronto/Hamilton and one to Kansas City.

While there is poetic justice to Winnipeg, the city screwed that up permanently when they failed to build an NHL sized arena downtown. The current building will not support an NHL club.

Nashville is still shaky too, wouldn't be shocked to see them move too. Vegas seems logical in that eventuality.

I dont know if you were there during the rivalry, but it had nothing to do with being "amazing", the Dick's fans were complete retards that makes the bruins fans sound savy. Their fans never knew nothing about hockey, they were all bandwagon jumpers, it was realy painful to hear anything about this vain team... They were dressed in pyjamas and existed only as the Habs punching bag, the rest of the league couldn't care less, like all of us should.

The NHL gave money to Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Vancouver from '99 to '04 under the Canadian Currency Assistance Plan.
