Ottawa Senators - Edmonton Oilers

To Ottawa:
Erik Cole ($4 million, UFA after this season)
(3rd round pick in 2009 if Kelly is involved in the deal)

To Edmonton:
Jason Smith ($2.6 million, 1 more year on contract)
OR
Chris Kelly ($2.125 million, 3 more years on contract)
(4th round pick in 2009 if Smith is involved in the deal)

The player going Edmonton's way is determined by whether or not Lee is good enough for a roster spot. If Lee is good enough, then Smith. If not, then Kelly. The chances of this trade is also determined by Cole's play, and whether or not he continues to struggle.

This deal improves Edmonton's terrible PK and gives Cole a chance on a new team to salvage his (and perhaps Ottawa's) season. I'm not saying Cole is the key, but it would help to gain some more cap space in the 2009 off-season with a huge free agent class.

Although, I wouldn't like this because I have an autographed Sens hat with Smith's name on it.

I know it doesn't have the superstar value as most of the deals on this board do, but oh well.

A couple weeks ago i would have jumped on the Kelly proposal but the way Cole has been playing lately i would not do it at all atleast right now.

For Smith you would only get a 3rd rounder if that. I love him as an Oiler fan but he is not the same player.

Cole is turning it around, trading him now would be a big mistake. Had your chance.

So Cole's been playing good lately? I'll call back in a week, I guess.

How about you take both of em in exchange for Cole and a 4th rounder? Smith could provide some leadership on Edmonton which seems to have been lacking this year.

I'm a Sens fan, but meh, I don't feel that Cole is worth both of them.

If your gonna start bringing up stats than i hate to break it to ya but

Goals for: EDM 18th , OTT 30th
goals per game: EDM 11th, OTT 25th
Plus Minus: EDM 13th, OTT 26th
Powerplay: EDM 14th, OTT 17th
Shootouts: EDM 16th OTT 25th

And there is more but nice try anywase...

About the proposal, I think Cole's really turning it around this past month or so. And he was finally rewarded with a 3 point night yesterday. I think edmonton better hang on for him for a bit.

If Smith or Kelly could single-handily transform our PK to be top-ten, why would you trade them for a UFA?

I'm sure Edmonton would rather keep Cole then have either Smith or Kelly.

The Sens have a ton of good PK forwards.

Don't hold your breath. He has been playing better for the last month. And has Chemistry with Gagner which has not been tried untell recently. Cole is not going to be traded just for that reason alone.

Before the Nashville game he had 1g, 1a, and was -6 in 10 games this month (while averaging 16:30 a game). Yeah, he's definitely turned the corner.

I said he was playing better. Never said his stats were better.

He is snakebit everybody knows it and if you have watched the games you have watched the effort and him almost dominating games on a nightly basis. The effort is there he just needs some time. And he is putting us on the powerplay a crap load as well. Just not ready to trade him. He might just need time to fit in on this team after playing his whole career for the Canes. Which is unfortunate for him with his contract status but the motivation should be there atleast you would think. Atleast he is showing some consistancy with Gags.

How many posts did he hit in those ten games? Are resident stats guy should know.

Smith is NOT going to help the Oilers PK.

We need a face-off man and Kelly is NOT it either (he barely takes any SH face-offs and his percentage overall is pretty low). Seems like Vermette makes a bigger difference on the PK.

We need a Stoll/Reasoner replacement. I'm okay with trading Cole for one, but Kelly and Smith are junk to me.

You'll be lucky to get a second for him with the way he's playing right now.

No thanks. Smith was on the decline before leaving Edmonton. I love the guy but I think I've had my fill of seeing him constantly ring the puck around the boards, often right onto the stick of a pinching, opposing player. Erik Cole is having a terrible year offensively but he's still a valuable player for the team and with the uncertainty of the economic situation I'd rather not to take on another $2 million contract for a bottom sixer considering all the big, long term deals the team has now.

Those numbers are wrong. Just so you know... it should be

Goals for: EDM 23th , OTT 30th
goals per game: EDM 18th, OTT 30th

So Vermette's trade value is determined entirely by his play in previous years, but Cole's value is based on his play this year alone?

Cole's value would be higher either way. He's been better this year, and he's been better previous years.
