Nashville acquires Zholtok and Bombadir

...from the Wild for 3rd and 4th round picks. TSN's page under Breaking News.

Guess that means the Wild have officially packed it in for this year. Good depth move for the preds.

Doesn't mean a whole lot for the Oilers, it's not like they had a realistic shot anymore of catching them. It's LA or bust.

I have to admit that I don't understand why Nashville is making so many moves.

I can understand the need for a playoff spot but their existing team was enough to get them in.

I also understand that they have all sorts of room in their budget.

But what perplexes me is all of a sudden they appear to be loading up for an actual cup run (albeit loading up in a poor mans way) but I can't imagine these moves benefitting them long term and they have done such a decent job over the last couple years in building from within.

It's like they abandoned their plan in mid stream. They still don't have the talent to compete with the big boys this year and they won't have it when it's all over either.

Reminds me of Florida when they loaded up in their 1st year (?) for the playoffs and were left trying to recoup their youth when it was over. Something that has taken till now to achieve.

Maybe.. just maybe..

They are looking at the other top teams and their goaltending:

Detroit - CuJo, Legace
Vancouver - Cloutier, Hedberg
Colorado - Aebischer

And maybe they think.. hey, we have Vokoun.. maybe we can win?

Maybe they think they could be this years' Anaheim Mighty Ducks?

Agree completely. Also, they need to light a fire in Nashville over hockey from what I've read. That market is by no means an American A market and the strike may well kill them.

The Preds first few years remind me of the NYI when Torrey and Arbour were building them with good old western boys and they've stepped forward impressively.

As for today's trade, Zholtok was 13-15-28 on the Wild and Bombardir played 20 minutes a night in Lemaire's system so he must have something going on.

Also, aside from Zholtok, adding Bombardir and Sullivan are long-term moves. It's not like their blowing the farm om playoff rentals.
